The image beauty of traditional Chinese ink and wash figure painting is often praised by later generations, but throughout history, the simplified brushwork and homogeneous patterns have also made it difficult for later generations to bring forth new ideas. From the emergence of Liang Kai in the Five Dynasties period to the fame of Ren Bonian in the late Qing Dynasty, the time difference was almost a thousand years. At the beginning of the 20 th century, with the introduction of advanced Western culture and the urgent demand for reforming the old social culture in China, progressive painters led by Xu Beihong and Jiang Zhaohe advocated integrating the realistic skills of Western painting into ink painting, changing outdated cultural habits, and firmly reflecting the social reality of China at that time with national realistic painting. Therefore, realistic ink figure painting emerged under the banner of realism,It has flourished as a mainstream art form for nearly a century.Until the rise of the artistic trend of the Eighth Five Year Plan in the 1980 s,realistic ink figure painting gradually lost its political meaning and emerged in contemporary free and diverse forms of expression. The study of the contemporary forms of expression of realistic ink and wash figure painting in this article mainly proceeds from two perspectives. One is a special analysis of the four characteristics of contemporary realistic ink and wash figure painting in terms of artistic expression that seek common ground while reserving differences. The first point is that contemporary painters focus on traditional pen and ink interests, making the pen and ink of realistic ink and wash figure painting more personalized expression and integrated creation,For example,Zhou Jingxin’s "Ink Sculpture" and Zhang Wang’s brush and ink style combining ink and print. The second point is that the black and white nature of ink painting coincides with the brightness and darkness of light and shadow in nature.Chen Yuming and Kong Zi transformed light and shadow into ink and wash, both based on reality and without losing their painting qualities.Third, when realistic ink and wash figure painting was first created, its value lay more in the connotation of realism, with"realism"itself taking a secondary place.Contemporary painters Wu Xiansheng,Bi Jianxun,Miao Zaixin, and He Jiaying attempted to trace the style of Western classical realism with ink and wash, exploring the inclusiveness and plasticity of national art.Fourth, the diverse use of color is a prominent feature of contemporary realistic ink and wash figure painting. It is in the works of Xinsheng,Yuan Wu,Ren Huizhong, and Zhao Jiancheng that color generates irreplaceable forms of expression and artistic beauty, making ink and wash painting more than just water and ink.Another aspect of this article is reflected in the analysis of the application forms of the performance characteristics of contemporary realistic ink figure painting.First of all, contemporary painters are more adept at combining realistic characters with freehand brushwork, interpreting written history into an epic atlas that is extremely warm and thought-provoking,and inheriting the important task of impressing national history with realistic ink figure paintings.Secondly, contemporary urban figures are the fresh blood of realistic ink and wash figure painting, not only Jiang Yong’an’s attention to"ink and wash realism"and"humanistic realism"of urban fringe groups, but also the fashionable and relaxed urban women depicted by Zhong Weijie, who together construct the complex and diverse social culture of contemporary cities. This article aims to explore the artistic aesthetics and cultural propositions of contemporary Chinese painting through detailed illustration and analysis of contemporary realistic ink figure painting, and strive to gain a glimpse of the future development trend of Chinese painting art in the rapidly changing era.
