Herbert George Wells(1866–1946)was one of the preeminent British writers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. His life coincided with the rapid development of industrialization in Britain, and his literary works reflected a clear sense of ecological ethics.Combined with Lu Shuyuan’s ecocriticism theory, this paper uses text close reading, literature research, and inductive summary methods to sort out the expression of ecological ethical consciousness in the author’s novel, analyze the causes of ecological ethical consciousness, and explore the practical significance contained therein. The thesis is divided into three parts: introduction, body and conclusion. The introduction expounds the research significance, research methods and innovation points of this paper, and sorts out the research status of Wells and his works at home and abroad. The text is divided into three parts. The first part is the expression of ecological ethics consciousness in Wells’ novels, including the anxiety of modern ecological crisis and the expectation of future ecological balance.Wells’ anxieties about the modern ecological crisis include the opposition between man and nature, the alienation between man and man,and the split between man and himself. He criticized the natural ecological crisis caused by industrialization and hoped that human beings would protect the environment. He criticized human beings’ violations of animal rights and hoped that human beings would be kind to all things in the world.Wells reflected on the alienated relationship between people, attacked the tendency of human beings to colonize and plunder, and looked forward to harmonious coexistence between people.Wells seeks a solution for the split between man and self,Lu Weixian’s compromise;George’s escape;Polly’s return, the choices of the characters are thought-provoking,and Wells’ anxiety is vividly reflected.Wells’ expectations for the future ecological balance are firstly reflected in the construction of an ideal view of human nature.People in Utopia have a strong body and a noble soul.Secondly, his vision of a harmonious society includes three aspects: science and technology, political civilization, and ecological civilization. In the end,Wells’ vision of world unity is realized through science and education. The second part is to analyze the reasons for the formation of Wells’ ecological ethics consciousness, including personal factors and social environment factors. On the personal level,it explores the influence of Wells’ indifferent family relationship and rough school experience on him.The indifferent family relationship made Wells hate the indifferent and alienated human relationship, and he longed for mutual love, harmony and friendship between people. The bumpy school experience made Wells cherish the hard-won learning opportunities even more,so the protagonists in his works can make their spiritual ecology balanced and self-consistent through reading,so as to build a harmonious relationship between man and man,man and nature. The social level includes the development of science and technology, the crisis of traditional beliefs and the impact of world wars on him. With the development of the industrial revolution, science and technology gradually became a tool of capitalist rule, which intensified the alienation of people and the ecological crisis, which made Wells more vigilant. The anti-religious trend of thought also had a great impact on Wells, and it can be seen that his novels are full of doubts and resistance to the hypocrisy of religion. The outbreak of the World War prompted Wells to change the focus of his literary creation, and his works also changed from criticizing social reality to thinking about world reorganization and harmonious ecological ethics. The third part is the reflection on the practical significance of ecological ethics consciousness in Wells’ novels, including the literary value and practical significance of his ecological ethics consciousness. His thinking on the critical value, philosophy and ecological aesthetic value of the disadvantages of industrial civilization highlights that his ecological ethics consciousness is a kind of holistic ecological philosophy consciousness. His awareness of ecological ethics coincides with the current human desire for the construction of ecological civilization. He warns people to pay more attention to the actual ecological crisis, and further triggers the thinking of the implementation strategy of ecological civilization construction. The two-pronged approach of ecological environmental protection policies and ecological aesthetic education makes the construction of ecological civilization The development goes one step further. The epilogue is a summary of the previous article.Through the analysis of the previous article,it is concluded that the ecological ethics consciousness in Wells’ novels has profound literary value and practical significance.
