Liaoning province is a province with a large minority population, with many minority components and a large population;the language identity of minority university students in Liaoning province can indicate the tendency of language use and language attitudes among the young generation in the province, and has an important positive role in guiding the contemporary development of ethnic languages. This paper adopts a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods, using a questionnaire survey platform to create and distribute questionnaires among university students in Liaoning province, and using SPSS statistical analysis software to analyse the results of the survey to obtain the current status of ethnic minority university students in Liaoning province, especially those of Manchu,Mongolian,Sibe and Korean ethnic groups, who are the ethnic minorities living in the province,in terms of their identification with their own mother tongue. The survey is based on data from the 6th and 7th censuses of China and provides an overview of the current situation of the ethnic minorities in the province, especially the Manchu,Mongolian,Sibe and Korean ethnic groups,as well as their linguistic profile.Firstly,a quantitative analysis is made of the specific situation of the mother tongue identity of the respondents to this survey. The basic situation of the mother tongue identity of university students in Liaoning Province was analysed at three levels:individual, family and school, and in two dimensions: mother tongue use and mother tongue attitude. The survey found that the mother tongue identity of the students in Liaoning province is weakened to varying degrees, and although they still have a sense of belonging to their own mother tongue, they tend to disagree with their own mother tongue in their daily language use and learning behaviour.A linear regression analysis was carried out to analyse the factors influencing the basic status of mother tongue identity among college students in Liaoning Province. The subjective level includes cognitive, emotional and motivational factors, while the objective level focuses on the environment in which language users live, mainly the language environment, the educational environment and the local political and economic environment. The combination of subjective and objective factors has led to a weakening trend in the mother tongue identity of ethnic minority university students in Liaoning Province. Finally, based on the factors that influence mother tongue identity,we propose feasible suggestions. The three dimensions of language acquisition, bilingual education and language policy are proposed at the individual, school and government levels to enhance ethnic minority students’ sense of mother tongue identity and to curb the trend of weakening mother tongue identity. At the individual level,it is important to start with the language awareness and cultural literacy of university students to develop a conscious awareness of ethnic mother tongue identity;at the school and bilingual education level,it is important to grasp the critical period of language acquisition and provide good basic pre-school mother tongue education;improve the quality of bilingual institutions to attract ethnic minority students;at the government and language policy level,it is important to firmly guide ethnic minority languages, increase the formulation of favourable language policies, and do a good job in providing language and cultural services. In terms of government and language policy,it is important to provide strong guidance for minority languages, increase the development of favourable language policies and improve language and cultural services.
