| With the continuous advancement of China’s targeted poverty alleviation and rural revitalization strategy, global economic organizations such as the World Bank and the International Fund for Agricultural Development have been increasing loan investments in China’s agriculture, which have achieved fruitful results. In the process of negotiation between the two parties of the loan, contract,as a legal document with clear rights and responsibilities, plays a crucial role. The report, based on the translation practice of Hunan agricultural loan project texts, analyses the register characteristics from the field, tenor and mode, and provides the translation strategies to achieve register equivalence. This translation report consists of five chapters. The first chapter is the description of the translation task, which explains the background, purpose and significance of the translation task. The second chapter is the process of the translation task, explaining the pre-translation preparations, translation implementation, and post-translation revisions. The third chapter is the theoretical framework of this report, mainly expounding the introduction of register theory, its applicability to translation and register equivalence in translation. The fourth chapter is the key part of this report, which analyses translation strategies adopted to achieve register equivalence. The author tries to be faithful to the field of the source texts, selects the appropriate meanings and avoids improper translation to achieve equivalence of field. The author focuses on the mood of the sentences, converts active and passive voice flexibly and reflects the relationship between communicating parties to achieve the equivalence of tenor. The author handles the logic of long sentences and cohesive words correctly, reproduces the cohesion and coherence of the discourse to reflect stylistic formality to achieve the equivalence of mode. The fifth chapter is a conclusion, summarizing the findings, enlightenment for the future translation work and limitations of this translation report.Through the translation practice, the author has the following findings.First, the contract has the distinctive characteristics: Its diction is formal and professional and its sentences are clear and strict in expression. What’s more, its text is logic and coherent, with style consistency.Second, register theory plays a guiding role in translating contract texts.Adopting appropriate translation strategies under the guidance of register theory can ensure that the characteristics of the targeted texts are consistent with the original texts,so as to achieve register equivalence. The author hopes the report can help further the study of the register theory in translation and be of value in the future research and practice of the contract translation. |
