A Report On The E-C Translation Of An Excerpt From The Six Edition Of World Civilization

Exploring the history of humanity in a global context can help us further understand the world we live in today.The author has selected chapter 41 of the Sixth edition of the World Civilization,jointly published by Peter N.Sterns,Michael Adas and other authors as the translation material,which focuses on the development process of globalization and the resistance to it.It is a relatively typical informative text.The main challenges in the translation is how to translate proper nouns,complicated sentences,and deal with textual cohesion.Under the guidance of the communicative translation theory,the author primarily analyzes the text from the levels of vocabulary,sentence structure,and discourse.In order to guarantee the accuracy and strictness of the informative texts,the author adopts various translation methods to solve the problems.First,at the vocabulary level,the author adopts the method of amplification,paraphrase and conversion to meet the expectations of the target language readers in terms of language form and cultural background.Secondly,at the sentence level,the author mainly adopts the method of voice conversion and division to break the restrictions of the original form from two perspectives:active-passive conversion and sentence segmentation.Thirdly,at the textual level,the author uses coherence and cohesion to improve the readability of translation.Through this translation practice,the author realized the importance of solid bilingual skills and rich translation practice experience,and at the same time realized the inadequacy of my own knowledge.It is hoped that this translation practice report can offer some reference for the relevant history textbook’s translation practice in the future.
