Abstract/Summary:
The study of linguistic landscape originated from Landry and Bourhis in 1997.It has been thriving in recent years and its research field has evolved from the initial multilingual perspective to sociology, language policy, communication ethnology, applied linguistics and other perspectives, hence has become a hot interdisciplinary issue. The first focus of the study of the Chinese linguistic landscape was on elucidating pertinent foreign theories.Empirical research has only recently received attention in the home linguistic scene. But the research perspective lacks depth and breadth, focusing mostly on the surface of language. This present thesis mainly focuses on the public signs in four selected Shanghai red attractions: Memorial Hall of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China,Longhua Martyrs Memorial Hall,Shanghai Lu Xun Museum and National Anthem Gallery,as well as their related official websites,We Chat accounts and miniprograms. It takes Trumper Hecht’s three-dimensional model as the theoretical framework, and adopts a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods for analysis.Through literature collection, field video recording, questionnaire survey and semi-structured interview, this thesis intends to proffer a comprehensive description of the linguistic features, tourists’ perceptions and motivation behind the construction of linguistic landscape from three dimensions.Out of the observation, from the physical dimension: Chinese is the dominant language code at the level of language choice, both in physical language landscape and virtual language landscape, which reflects the strict adherence of the sign designer to the national language policy;Additionally, the majority of multilingual signs are bilingual in Chinese and English, primarily emphasizing the promotion of red culture in scenic areas. The translation quality of the signs is also excellent; As for inscription and emplacement, the texts in the memorial facilities for major historical events, represented by Memorial Hall of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the National Anthem Gallery, are mostly in red, yellow, and white;the texts in the memorial facilities for people, represented by Shanghai Lu Xun Museum and Longhua Martyrs Memorial Hall, are mostly in black, white and brown. The text emplacement on the signs in the selected red scenic spots is in line with the standard, which once again highlights the absolute superiority of the Chinese. From the experiential dimension: most tourists pay attention to the linguistic landscape in the scenic spot and its English translation, and tourists assent to the setting of Chinesedominated and English-supplemented linguistic landscape in red attractions. From the political dimension: linguistic landscape in the red tourist sites dominated by the government has reached a high degree of unity with the official language policy, which strengthens the cultural identity of the Chinese language in China, and also reflects the implementation of China’s language policy in the red tourism scenic spots in Shanghai. In addition,Shanghai actively strengthened the construction of information application platforms related to red resources through the network and promoted the online centralized promotion and publicity of red resources, which also conforms to the relevant policies and regulations of Shanghai on the inheritance and promotion of red resources.
