This is an English-Chinese translation report based on Reiss’ s text typology theory, and the translation material is Appearance in Reality published in 2021.The author John Heil explores a fundamental philosophical question from a new perspective, namely, how is appearance related to reality? This book offers fresh insights, which provides reference for scholars interested in philosophy. As a typical academic work, its language is professional, formal and logical.Specifically,at the lexical level, there are a large number of professional terms, proper nouns, referring expressions, and polysemous words. At the syntactical level, long and complex sentences with strict logic, sentences with multiple punctuation marks, and sentences containing similar components are manifested. At the discoursal level, sentences and paragraphs in the source text is structured with implicit logical relations, and some semantic information is hidden. These linguistic features are what the translator should get to grasp with during translation. The translator chooses the first two chapters of this book as the source text for translation, aiming to promote academic exchanges in the field of philosophy at home and abroad, and also to provide reference with the translation of academic works.Guided by Reiss’ s text typology theory, the translator determines that the source text belongs to the informational text according to its language features and textual function. The function of informative text is to convey information, and it focuses on content rather than form.In the process of translation, the translator should adopt a meaning-based translation strategy, using plain and clear language to convey the information to the target readers in an accurate, complete and understandable manner.Combining the linguistic feature of the source text, the translator analyzes the translation at the lexical, syntactical, and discoursal levels.Regarding the lexical features, the translator explores how to clarify the background information of terms and proper nouns, specify the referring expressions, and eliminate ambiguity of polysemous words. From the syntactical dimension, the translator discusses how to simplify long and complex sentences into short ones, convert redundant punctuation marks and omit repetitive information in sentences. In terms of the discourse, the translator elaborates how to add logical conjunctions and maintain information integrity and semantic coherence to achieve high-quality translation of philosophical texts. It is proved that Reiss’ s text typology theory not only provides clear implementation criteria for translations, but also serves as a good guide in evaluating the quality of translations. |
