In the past decade, linguistic landscape has attached increasing attention in sociolinguistics, semiotics and other fields. The original text of this English-Chinese translation project is excerpted from Chapter Two and Three of Linguistic Landscape in the City, which focuses on the symbolic significance of urban language signs. The original text contains many professional terms in sociology and linguistics, nominalization structures and complex sentences, which brings some difficulties to translation.Chesterman’s Translation Norm includes four norms of expectancy, accountability, communication and relation. To address the above translation difficulties, this thesis discusses the selection and application of translation strategies for academic texts in sociolinguistics from the perspective of Chesterman’s Translation Norm. The main findings of this thesis are as follows: Firstly, the translator should consider the readers’ expectation and the readability of the target text.Secondly, the translator should start from the following aspects:(1)In syntax, adopting transposition, unit shift and sentence structure change to improve the readability of translation.(2)In semantics, adopting abstraction and distribution changes to reach the accuracy.(3)In pragmatics, applying explicitness, coherence and visibility changes to achieve linguistic meanings. In conclusion, they all meet the requirements of expectation norms, responsibility norms, communication norms and relationship norms, making the translation conform to the readability and accuracy of the academic text.It is hoped that this thesis can enrich the theoretical perspective of academic text translation and provide some reference for the study of language landscape at home and abroad.
