| Alceste as one of the six reform operas by the renowned 18th-century composer Gluck,had its first performance in Vienna in 1767 in Italian.It was later rearranged and performed in Paris in 1776 with a French version.The two versions of Alceste differ in artistic treatment,plot development,and emotional expression.Specifically,when composing the Paris version of Alceste,Gluck made some modifications to the music style and characterization of the roles,resulting in a more enriched content,more splendid music,and more complex character emotions.In comparison,the Vienna version appears more classical and concise,with a deeper and more serious portrayal of the thematic content.These differences reveal Gluck’s thoughts and changes in the process of opera composition,as well as his aesthetic concepts and cultural values in the creative process.They provide important reference value for further exploration of Gluck’s opera composition techniques and styles.This study focuses on the two versions of Alceste as the main research objects,with a particular emphasis on discussing their characteristics and differences.It also attempts to identify the reasons behind these differences by conducting a meticulous study of the full scores and scripts of the two versions of Alceste.The study summarizes and generalizes the characteristics of the music style,script,and important arias in the two versions,and further compares them,elucidating the influence of the differences in music and script on character development in the opera and their interaction.Through the study of the two versions of Alceste,spanning a period of nine years,we can gain a clearer understanding of the evolution of Gluck’s creative style,which can help us better comprehend and appreciate the opera Alceste.This research is divided into three chapters.The first chapter introduces Gluck’s life and the development of his opera composition,explaining his early music creations and opera reform ideas.The second chapter provides a detailed analysis of the music style,opera script,and the important arias of the main character Alceste in the two versions of Gluck’s Alceste,highlighting the different characteristics of the two versions.The third chapter compares and summarizes the artistic techniques and script characteristics employed in the two versions,discussing the interconnection between music performance and dramatic plot,as well as the influence on the characters in the opera. |
