The novel "Journey to the West" exhibits a rich and diverse range of spatial types, remarkable variations in spatial characteristics, notable effectiveness in spatial functions, and ingenious employment of spatial techniques. These elements have had a profound influence on the construction and evaluation standards of spatial writing in later novels. This article takes a spatial perspective to explore the spatial narrative features of "Journey to the West" and analyze the framework of its spatial storytelling. The first part primarily focuses on categorizing the spatial construction in "Journey to the West." Based on factors such as the characters’ factions and geographical traits,it can be divided into five types: celestial realms, underworld realms,Dragon Palace and water mansions, mountains and caves, and cities and villages.By analyzing textual materials, this part aims to summarize the characteristics and similarities and differences of these five spatial types, providing a foundation for exploring the inherent connection between space and narrative. The second part primarily analyzes the functions of spatial storytelling in "Journey to the West" and explores the role of constructed spaces in developing the story plot, depicting character images, and deepening thematic significance. The diversity of spaces serves as a prerequisite to meet the needs of story plot development and aims to provide necessary settings for organizing the story plot. The transitions between different spaces also contribute to driving the progression of the story plot. The characteristics of spaces can imply the identity of characters, and character actions are grounded in specific spaces. Moreover, the activities of characters in specific spaces serve as windows for showcasing their personalities.Spaces themselves possess explicit symbolic meanings and can also convey metaphorical significance through their inherent connotations, thus conveying the author’s ideological concepts. The third part primarily discusses the techniques and strategic means employed in the spatial storytelling of "Journey to the West," focusing on three aspects: spatial transitions, spatial representation, and spatial structure characteristics,as well as the relationship between time and space.Regarding spatial transitions, special emphasis is placed on the transformative methods inherent to the characteristics of divine and demonic novels and the actions of characters. In terms of spatial representation, the focus is on the perspectives of the narrator and the characters, highlighting the distinct characteristics of space presentation from different viewpoints. The open structure employed in "Journey to the West" allows for the continual expansion of narrative spaces, while also addressing the treatment of the temporal and spatial relationship. It particularly emphasizes the dissolution of time to highlight the outstanding portrayal of space.
