Abstract/Summary:
The Guanyin Xuanyi,a work described by Tiantai Zhiyi and recorded by his disciple Guanding,is a further elaboration of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva Puimenpin in Lotus Sutra based on the Fahua Xuanyi. As one of the classics of Tiantai, the theory of“evil in buddha-nature” in the Guanyin Xuanyi has had a profound influence on the development of Tiantai Buddhism in later generations, and has attracted the attention of scholars at home and abroad. However, there is little mention of the content of the Guanyin Xuanyi text as it relates to the practice of observing the mind. This article takes the Guanyin Xuanyi as a whole as an entry point for the interpretation of the theory of buddha-nature and the practice of observing the mind contained in its text,in order to glimpse the characteristics of Master Zhiyi’s thought of emphasizing both doctrine and practice. The first introductory chapter introduces the origins and significance of this paper, focusing on the analysis and evaluation of the current state of domestic and international research on the Guanyin Xuanyi.Chapters 2 analyses the content structure of the Guanyin Xuanyi and segments it.Chapter 3 introduces the true theory of “the complete unification of the three truths”,which is the premise of the doctrine and practice.Chapters 4 and 5 explore the ideas of the Guanyin Xuanyi from the perspectives of doctrine and practice respectively: the theory of “good and evil in buddha-nature” is explained in terms of the “three-cause buddha nature” and “virtues possessed by nature and practice”;the theory of “one thought three thousand worlds” is explained in terms of the “three thousand worlds” and the “threefold contemplation in one mind” and summarize. In conclusion, through an analysis of the text itself and the ideas it contains this paper hopes to further understand the unique charm of the “dual beauty of doctrine and practice” in Tiantai thought,in which Buddhist doctrine and observational practice are inseparable, using the Guanyin Xuanyi as an example.
