| This translation practice report is based on the translation practice of chapters six and seven of the book Pounder’s Marine Diesel Engines and Gas Turbines(10th edition),guided by Theme Progression theory, aiming at exploring the Chinese translation strategy of complex sentences in the text of Marine Engineering English. The thematic progression pattern of the original text is a reflection of the information structure of the original text and an outgrowth of the author’s communicative intention, which should be paid attention to in translation. When translating, the translator will first refer to the thematic progression pattern of the original text.Because there are some similarities between English and Chinese, the thematic progression pattern and the thematic structure of the original text can often be reproduced well in the translation. But in view of the differences between the two languages, the translator does not always copy the thematic progression pattern of the original text in the same way.In order to conform to Chinese expression habits, the thematic structure of the original text will be adjusted through changing passivity, adjusting the word order and reconstructing the thematic structure,so as to change the thematic progression pattern of the original text. The content selected in this translation practice belongs to Marine Engineering English, with many professional terms and its own characteristics in syntax, including the frequent use of passive voice, many qualified components, complex sentence structure. If these complex sentences are not handled properly,it will make the translation difficult to understand. Therefore,in order to better reproduce the communicative intention of the original text, this report studies complex sentences with the help of Zhu Yongsheng’s thematic progression, aiming to provide new ideas for the Chinese translation method of complex sentences and expand the research corpus of thematic progression. |
