A Comparative Study Of The Attitudinal Resources In Chinese And American News Reports On Marine Pollution From The Perspective Of Ecolinguistics

Based on the ecological attitude system,this study compares and analyzes the attitudinal resources in Corpus of Chinese News Reports on Marine Pollution(CCRMP)and Corpus of American News Reports on Marine Pollution(CARMP)and explores the ecological features of the attitudinal resources from the dimensions of ecological factors and ecological orientations.The findings are as follows.(1)There is a significant difference in the overall distribution of the attitudinal resources between CCRMP and CARMP.Among the subsystems of attitude,there is no significant difference in affect and appreciation between the two corpora,while judgment resources display higher usage in CCRMP,indicating that Chinese news reports tend to judge the behaviors related to marine pollution based on social ethics.(2)For the subcategories of judgment,affect and appreciation in attitude system,8 subcategories are significantly different between the two corpora.Specifically,CCRMP tends to highlight the unusual consequences of marine pollution,the competence and determination of the government and relevant management in solving problems,while CARMP conveys more dissatisfaction and unease toward marine pollution.(3)Regarding the ecological features of the attitudinal resources,ecological factors including affect origination,judgment standard and appreciation object are mainly nature-based in the two corpora.Specifically,the nature-based judgment standard in CCRMP is more frequently demonstrated than in CARMP,while the human-based affect origination in CARMP is presented more than in CCRMP.In line with the analysis of the Chi-square Test results of the above ecological features,it is found that Chinese news reports tend to be more ecological,which is more conducive to the benign development of the ecosystem,and more available to lead readers to be concerned about marine pollution and ocean protection.This study enriches the research in the field of ecological discourse analysis and helps improve people’s ecological awareness and literacy,as well as establish the ecological ethics of harmonious co-existence between humans and nature.
