Qian Jibo is a master of Chinese education who influenced China in the 20th century.In the early years of the Republic of China,a transitional period of modern Chinese writing education,Qian Jibo devoted his life to the construction of basic Chinese education with a high sense of mission,carrying out exploratory practices of composition teaching.This essay tries to illustrate Qian Jibo’s thoughts and praxes of composition teaching based on his teaching practices and theoretical works.The first chapter focuses on the analysis of and brief introduction to the contemporary background and origin of Qian Jibo’s composition teaching.Considering the external environment,Chinese society at that time was faced with the crisis of traditional cutural dislocation,which made Qian Jibo devote himself in the composition teaching with the sense of mission to carry out the literary tradition.Meanwhile,the compositionteaching per se was also undergoing a difficult transition from the traditional to the modern which presented him a lot of opportunities to explore the liberation of individual spirituality.The second chapter centers on Qian Jibo’s proposition practices in composition.Carrying out the scholarship tradition of "acquiring knowledge by studying phenomena"and organizing composition proposition around authentic situations.Qian Jibo,on the one hand,integrally planned and designed composition proposition to make proposition in daily education closer to students’ real life,and,on the other hand,created task situations to cultivate students’ thinking ability.The third chapter focuses on Qian Jibo’s teaching methods in composition.Qian Jibo adhered to the idea of heuristic teaching.To be specific,he put the process of students’ writing before the process of teacher’s lecturing.In his opinion,only after students have tried their best to think(but still have no answer),the teacher can begin to solve their learning difficulties.Moreover,in his class,he also designed enlightening questions to construct equal teacher-student dialogs,thus achieving his teaching purpose of truly inspiring students.The forth chapter deals with Qian Jibo’s correction practices in composition.Qian followed the principle of promoting students’ strength and correcting their shortcomings.Paying attention to students’ personality characteristics,he adopted differentiated correction strategies based on their different writing abilities and styles.Meanwhile,he concentrated on the pertinence of guidance in the the process of correction.The fifth chapter discusses the historical significance of Qian Jibo’s composition teaching.On the one hand,he urged to liberate students’ individual spirituality,through protecting their writing interests and respecting their creative spirits.He attempted to realize the transformation from the "subject-centric" teaching pattern to the"student-centric" teaching pattern.On the other hand,he considered the succession of Chinese literary tradition as his responsibility.He not only firmly stood in the position of safeguarding the national culture but also integrated traditional culture and modern civilization in his practices of composition teaching.Qian Jibo’s thoughts and praxes of composition teaching not just echo the historical trend of the modern transformation of writing education,but develop his personalized characteristics,too.His great attention to individual students as well as his insightful understanding of cultural heritage still have a strong practical importance for composition teaching in contemporary China.
