Population ageing is a global problem that has affected the economic and social development of a country or region. In recent years,China is experiencing a "population crisis" under the aging of the population, the number of elderly people has increased, the proportion of the working population has declined, the advantage of low-cost labor has gradually disappeared, the demographic dividend has changed from quantity to quality, and industrial development has changed to technological innovation-driven.So has the deepening degree of population aging had an impact on China’s technological innovation? If so,what is the impact? This paper clarifies the relationship between the two through theoretical analysis and empirical testing, which accelerates C hina’s entry into the forefront of innovative countries to provide a certain reference.Firstly, this paper collates relevant literature at home and abroad and expounds the definition of population aging and technological innovation and related theories. At the same time, how the aging of the population affects technological innovation is analyzed from the theoretical level, and four theoretical hypotheses are proposed. Then,we use the provincial panel data of 31 provinces in C hina from 2015 to 2019 to analyze the impact of population aging on technological innova tion. The technological innovation is depicted by the number of patents applications per capita, the aging population is measured by the dependency ratio of the elderly. We use the Lasso variable selection methods to select nine variables as the control variables. We use the unit root test and the multi-collinearity test to ensure the reliability of the data before modeling. Then the static panel model is constructed, and the test hypothesis 1is established, and we use the robustness test to test the empirical results.Further,R&D capital investment, manpower quantity and manpower quality are introduced into the model as adjustment variables to study the regulatory effect of population aging on technological innovation, test hypothesis 2-4 is established. We use the variable substitution method to test the robustness of the model after empirical testing. Finally, according to the theoretical analysis and empirical test results, relevant policy suggestions are proposed.Through theoretical analysis and empirical testing, this paper draws the following conclusions:(1)The deepening of population aging has a pos itive role in promoting the development of technological innovation, and for every 1% increase in the degree of population aging, the number of patent applications per capita would increase by 3453.The model passed the robustness test, once again verifying that the aging population promotes technological innovation.(2)R&D capital investment, human resource quality and human resource quantity are all regulatory variables affected by population aging on technological innovation, among which capital investment and manpower quantity negatively regulate population aging to promote technological innovation, while manpower quality plays a positive role in regulation. This paper enriches the research related to the promotion of technological innovation by population aging, studies the influence mechanism of population aging on technological innovation by using a variety of static panel model methods and studies the regulatory effect of the influence based on multiple perspectives, providing new ideas for studying the relationship between population aging and technological innovation. Therefore, the research in this paper has very important significance.
