| General Secretary Xi Jinping stressed that "population ageing is a worldwide problem with profound and lasting effects on human society." From a global perspective, slowing population growth is not just a problem for China;ageing is also a global trend. The United Nations estimates that by 2050,16 percent of the world’s population will be aged 65 and over.Since the introduction of the 14 th Five-Year Plan, the number of elderly people in China has been steadily increasing and the ageing trend is intensifying. The ageing population has brought new opportunities and challenges to China’s economic development, especially in terms of industrial structure. While this has led to a shortage of age-appropriate labour, the ageing of China’s population has also contributed to the development of the "Silver industry" and other ageing industries. At present,China is also vigorously promoting the implementation of a positive ageing strategy, which will continue to contribute to the high-quality development of the elderly and the ageing industry. At the same time,a new generation of artificial intelligence is beginning to flourish around the world, injecting new momentum into economic and social development and fundamentally changing the way people produce and live. The combination of artificial intelligence and the ageing industry will help to promote the development of the "smart ageing" industry. In addition, artificial intelligence will also help to promote technological innovation and improve the quality of the workforce, providing new opportunities for the transformation of China’s growth momentum and creating new development opportunities for the Chinese economy under the impact of the epidemic. This paper focuses on the impact of population ageing on the upgrading of industrial structure in the context of artificial intelligence, and is structured around the following ideas: firstly,we review the relevant studies on population ageing, industrial structure upgrading and artificial intelligence at home and abroad, summarizing the existing views and reviewing them;secondly,we explore the impact of population ageing on industrial structure upgrading in the context of artificial intelligence from two levels: mathematical model derivation and impact path analysis.Second, based on the provincial panel data of China from 2008 to 2019,we construct a dynamic panel model by introducing the lagged one-period term of industrial structure upgrading to empirically test the impact and mechanism of population ageing on industrial structure upgrading in China in the context of artificial intelligence, and test the heterogeneity among the eastern, central and western regions.Heterogeneity tests were conducted in three regions.Based on the above theoretical and empirical studies, this paper draws the following conclusions: Firstly, population ageing has a significant positive impact on industrial structure upgrading, and artificial intelligence strengthens the promotion effect of population ageing on industrial structure upgrading;secondly, the promotion effect of population ageing on industrial structure upgrading is weaker in the eastern region than in the western region, and the result is not significant in the central region;and under the interaction effect of artificial intelligence, the effect of population ageing on industrial structure upgrading in the The promotion effect of population aging on industrial structure upgrading in the eastern region is smaller than that in the central region and also smaller than that in the western region;thirdly, under the interaction of artificial intelligence, population aging promotes industrial structure upgrading through three paths: affecting consumption demand, technological innovation and human capital accumulation.Combining the above analysis results with the current actual situation in China, this paper puts forward corresponding policy suggestions for actively coping with population ageing and promoting industrial structure upgrading. |
