The advent of the new media era has refreshed people’s traditional way of life.Facing the challenges and opportunities of the new media era, students majoring in martial arts and traditional ethnic sports are responsible for the important mission of spreading, promoting, inheriting and innovating Chinese traditional sports culture, and it is especially important to improve the media literacy of students in this major. This paper conducts a targeted study on the media literacy of martial arts and ethnic traditional sports students through the research methods of literature, questionnaire survey, mathematical statistics and logical analysis, and finds that there are few studies related to the media literacy of martial arts and ethnic traditional sports students, ignoring the students’ needs for media literacy.Based on the background of the new media era, professional characteristics and students’ development needs, and with reference to the existing media literacy-related studies at home and abroad, the media literacy of martial arts and ethnic traditional sports students was divided into four dimensions: media proximity, media interpretation, media creation and media communication, and after testing, the dimension division and index selection had high reliability and validity. In order to cultivate and improve the media literacy of martial arts and ethnic traditional sports students,we must first understand the specific status of the current development of students’ media literacy.By investigating the media literacy status of students majoring in martial arts and traditional ethnic sports in five sports colleges and universities,we learned that the media literacy of students of this major in the surveyed colleges and universities is possessed. The results show that the students’ media literacy is not satisfactory, and the specific problems are manifested in four aspects: media use bias, which restricts the development of martial arts literacy;lack of critical thinking, which hinders the construction of martial arts cognition;lack of practice in creative martial arts, and lack of innovation in media creation;and low ability to communicate martial arts, which limits the layout of martial arts communication talents. In addition,it was found through the difference test that although there was no significant difference in the media literacy of students in different grades, the level of media literacy of students in lower grades was slightly higher than that of students in higher grades, which also indicated that the effect of sports colleges on cultivating students’ media literacy needed to be improved.Through the analysis,we found that there are five main problems in the cultivation of media literacy for students of martial arts and traditional national sports: the attention of schools needs to be improved, the curriculum lacks systematization, the teachers’ strength is insufficient, the cultivation of media literacy is disconnected from professional practice ability, and students’ self-education awareness is insufficient. In view of the problems in students’ media literacy and cultivation,we should integrate the strengths of many parties to optimize the path of students’ media literacy: from five aspects, including strengthening the guarantee of media literacy cultivation, improving the media literacy curriculum, building a team of teachers, creating a practice platform of "martial arts + media literacy",and stimulating students’ self-awareness.In order to promote students’ media literacy to professional, scientific and systematic development, and to help students’ all-round development,we will form a multi-path synergy to give students a "powerful tool" to improve their professional information recognition ability and spread martial arts.
