Background: With the development of the times, contemporary young people face various realistic pressures and problems that come one after another, which not only make them suffer mentally but also may lead to psychological disorders and even some tragic consequences. The issue of how to effectively improve the state of mind of college students has become a hot topic of discussion, and many studies have found that the role of physical self-esteem in the relationship between physical activity and state of mind deserves deeper investigation.Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the current situation of physical activity, physical self-esteem,and state of mind among college students,to understand their differential characteristics in terms of relevant variables, and to investigate the correlations and mediating effects among physical activity, physical self-esteem,and state of mind among college students. This study was conducted to further improve college students’ understanding of the positive significance of physical activity in promoting the development of mental state and physical self-esteem,and to provide a theoretical basis for the positive significance of physical activity in promoting the physical and mental health of college students.METHODS: This study used literature, questionnaires, and mathematical analysis to investigate in depth the physical activity, physical self-esteem level, and state of mind of 794 full-time undergraduate students. To better analyze the data, data analysis software such as SPSS 26.0 and PROCESS 4.0 were used to achieve the processing of descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, correlation analysis, regression analysis methods and mediating effect test analysis.Results:(1)College students as a whole showed a lack of physical activity, and there were significant differences in the amount of physical activity among college students in terms of gender and age(p < 0.05),and there were significant differences in the frequency of exercise in terms of whether they were only children(p < 0.01).(2)The physical self-esteem level of college students showed a moderate status quo.The survey showed that there were significant differences in the physical self-esteem levels of college students in terms of gender and age.In addition, there were significant differences in physical self-worth,sports performance, physical attractiveness and physical quality among general college students. In addition, there are also significant differences in the physical self-esteem level of ordinary college students in terms of the amount of physical activity, intensity of exercise, duration of exercise and frequency of exercise.(3)The overall state of mind of college students is negative.Significant differences were found in the TMD and its sub-dimensions of anger, energy, and self-esteem by gender(p < 0.05),self-esteem by age(p < 0.01),tension,depression,and panic by residence in the household(p <(p < 0.05);the panic dimension in the state of mind of college students showed significant differences in whether they were only children(p < 0.05);the state of mind of college students(TMD)and its sub-dimensions showed significant differences in the amount of physical activity, exercise intensity, exercise time, and exercise frequency(p < 0.001).(4)There was a two-by-two correlation between physical activity, physical self-esteem and state of mind among college students(p < 0.01).(5)After regression analysis,it was found that physical activity had a negative predictive effect on state of mind, physical self-esteem had a significant negative predictive effect on state of mind, and physical activity had a significant positive predictive effect on physical self-esteem.(6)A partial mediating effect of physical self-esteem as a mediating variable between the amount of physical activity and state of mind(TMD)was found by the mediating effect test, with an indirect effect value of-0.134(95% CI:-0.207,-0.067)The percentage of mediating effect was 19.99%.Conclusions.(1)The factors of gender and age among demographic variables showed significant differences in physical activity, physical self-esteem,and state of mind;the factors of household location, and whether one child was born alone showed significant differences in some variables.(2)College students with higher physical activity showed better physical self-esteem levels than those with lower physical activity, and their state of mind tended to show better levels, with lower negative emotions and higher positive emotions.(3)In the pathway of physical activity-body self-esteem-state of mind, body self-esteem can be used as a mediating factor to improve the level of body self-esteem and thus the state of mind through physical activity.
