The rapid aging of China’s population is a significant factor affecting China’s longterm economic growth. The aging population reduces the effective labor supply, resulting in a gradual decline in the role of young people in entrepreneurship development. In the current environment, where aging is difficult to reverse,it is a sensible choice for businesses to actively exert the residual heat of the elderly to increase entrepreneurship success rates. The State Council and municipal governments have recognized the situation, recognizing that the demographic dividend is soon to run out. They have openly encouraged senior talents to form their own firms, and the Silver Talents Program has steadily been implemented. However, there is currently a scarcity of study on aging and entrepreneurship, particularly in China’s western region. As a result,in order to present empirical data and policy recommendations for enhancing entrepreneurial vitality in China’s western region, this article examines the link between aging populations and entrepreneurship from a macro viewpoint.Using macro data from 12 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions in China’s western region from 2001 to 2019,we systematically analyze the relationship between two from three aspects: heterogeneity(opportunity entrepreneurship and necessity entrepreneurship),action mechanism, and spatial spillover efficacy,in order to deeply analyze the relationship between the aging population and entrepreneurship. The study found that:(1)There are differences in time and space evolution between the aging population and entrepreneurship, with entrepreneurship’s temporal and spatial evolution being diverse among kinds.(2)The impact of the aging population on entrepreneurship is inverted U-shaped,with a higher impact on the opportunity entrepreneurship.(3)Human capital serves as an evident intermediate between them, and its impact on opportunity entrepreneurship is much greater.(4)From a spatial perspective, local aging has a significant spatial spillover effect on entrepreneurship, and its spatial spillover effect on necessity entrepreneurship is more strong. The findings reveal:(1)The phenomena of time-space evolution difference should be considered while studying the relationship between aging and entrepreneurship.(2)The elderly person’s experience advantage contributes to the entrepreneurial activity, but its impact is reducing with time.(3)The need for human resources in opportunity entrepreneurship will be higher.(4)Interprovincial resource circulation will enable older entrepreneurs to choose less risky survival business.According to the conclusions, this research has provided some theoretical and practical contributions. In terms of theory, this study uses an interdisciplinary approach and looks at aging from a different viewpoint, which helps to enrich and promote the entrepreneurial management theory. From a practical perspective,Policymakers should fully reflect the elderly’s knowledge and skills advantages,as well as the active role of the old in promoting entrepreneurial vitality,by enhancing talent introduction policies. Moreover,we will improve the business environment in the China’s western region, strengthen spatial resource ties with the eastern and central regions, and assist western firms in achieving high-quality development.
