| On May 5,2018,the 200 th anniversary of Marx’s birth, the media around the world set off a craze to commemorate him.As a critic of capitalism and an advocate of communism,"the revival of Marx" has caused a series of debates in today’s global society, which triggered the question of how the global media should face Marx..Based on the theoretical perspective of Global Memory, combined with the methods of Content Analysis and Discourse Analysis, this paper conducts a parallel comparative study of the media coverage texts on the 200 th anniversary of Marx’s birth,so as to investigate the internal mechanism and structural dimensions behind the differential interpretation of Marx by various media. This research focuses on answering the following three questions:Firstly, what kind of media image of Marx has been constructed by the news media of various countries through commemorating "the 200 th anniversary of Marx’s birth";Secondly, which topics related to Marx appear frequently and become the theme in the news media reports of various countries? In what frame do the media of different countries place themselves? What are the similarities and differences in their evaluation of Marx and his legacy? Thirdly,on the issue of commemorating Marx, what factors will influence the evaluation of Marx.It is found that the social thoughts projected behind different discourses,as well as the underlying internal mechanism and the logic of the times behind the ideological turn, have a significant impact on the media cognition of Marx.Marx’s commemoration is carried out under the background of "globalization" and "capitalism is facing difficulties"."Uncovering the old scars of Germany" and "Calling for Marx’s return" have become the two most prominent themes. After establishing and exploring the different framework of media cognition of Marx in different countries,it is found that there are significant differences between the media memorial discourse on Marx’s and the "globalization index" and "perception of capitalism" in media countries, while the commemorative nature of "communist memory" in media countries has little influence on Marx’s cognition. The specific performance is as follows: Firstly, the higher the globalization index is,the more the media will focus on the historical significance of Marx’s thought heritage,as well as the prediction and countermeasures of globalization in the world free market;on the contrary, the media tends to report the limitations and negative effects of globalization, and strengthen the political and ideological problems of Marx and his theories.Second, the media of various countries generally showed a strong perception of the plight of capitalism, reviewed the drawbacks of capitalism, and unanimously affirmed Marx’s criticism of capitalism as an intellectual and economist.Third, there is no significant difference between countries’ communist memories and their media reports on Marx’s discourse. The media’s memory of the Communist movement has become a global memory, and transnational historical elements are activated. The media in Germany,France, the United States and the United Kingdom present a single interpretation of the relationship between communism and Marx, while the Indian media have shown tolerance for communism and multiple Memorial discourses. The image of "Marx" constructed by the media shows multiple dimensions: he is the icon of knowledge and politics, who has been sanctified and stereotyped for his criticism of capitalism and ideological contribution to the humanities and Social Sciences; He is also stigmatized as the power other because the western media habitually imposed the mistakes of the past Communist movement on him.The concealment and absence of Marx’s image and his theoretical text in the media memory version make him fall into the role of a familiar stranger-we seem to be talking about Marx intensively, but we are actually far away from him. Therefore,in addition to the concealment, this study explores the path of transcendental understanding of Marx by returning to the original text of Marx and the era problems he faced,so as to understand the logic and profound meaning behind his discourse in the dual interaction between the academic and the revolutionary. The study further reflects on the possibility of cracking the paradox of globalization, considers the significance of Marx in today’s global communication, establishes a global dialogue through the media, bridges the historical truth left out in the course of self-talk,faces the possibility of the past, present and future, and clarifies the truth, restoration and reconciliation in the process of confirmation and correction. |
