| This study makes a comparative analysis on the framing of Asian discrimination coverage from American local and national newspapers. The study takes Entman’s paradigm of news reporting and Iyengar’s thematic and episodic framing as theoretical foundation to analyze the framing of American local and national newspapers, and discusses on possible factors that may affect the Asian discrimination coverage from American local and national newspapers. The study results suggest that although some local newspapers tend to choose thematic framing in the coverage of Asian discrimination, most of the local newspapers tend to choose episodic framing in the coverage of Asian discrimination, while national newspapers have relatively strong tendency to choose episodic framing in the coverage of Asian discrimination but still have a proportion of the news reports using thematic framing in the coverage of Asian discrimination.Local newspapers seldom apply the paradigm of news reporting deeply and thoroughly, while national newspapers tend to apply the paradigm of news reporting relatively more thoroughly, with the preference of factors of the news reporting paradigm being different between newspapers. The closer the local newspaper is from the location of Asian discrimination cases, the deeper and more thoroughly the coverage of Asian discrimination from the local newspaper may be,with the distance having no obvious impact on national newspapers, though such a hypothesis is not so absolute. The comprehensive level of a city does not have obvious impact on the coverage of Asian discrimination of the newspapers, while the audience of the newspaper, the proportion of Asian population of the city, and the party that the state where the newspaper belongs to supports have certain impact on Asian discrimination coverage of the newspaper. |
