As the internal driving force of information behavior, information needs have always been a hot topic of research in various disciplines. However,as a vulnerable group, preschool children’s cognitive psychology is still in the developmental stage, and cognitive differences can also affect their understanding of information needs, thereby affecting the degree of satisfaction of information needs. In order to facilitate the healthy growth of preschool children,we must fully understand their cognitive characteristics and further understand their cognitive needs for their own information.Based on the limited number of domestic and foreign related research literature, this article mainly focuses on preschool children, with information needs as the research topic, and studies how the cognitive process of preschool children affects their information needs from the perspective of cognitive psychology. This article is roughly divided into four parts based on the research topic and purpose:The first part mainly elaborates on relevant concepts and the theoretical basis for their application.Firstly, based on previous research by scholars, the concept of information needs is summarized by drawing on similarities.Secondly, the age range and related concepts of information needs of preschool children are clarified. It is supported by cognitive psychology, information demand theory,Grounded theory and Wilson’s information behavior theory to ensure the rationality of the research. The second part proves the connection between cognitive psychology and information needs based on Wilson’s theory of information behavior. At the beginning of the formal study, the cognitive psychology and information needs of preschool children were observed using observation methods to understand their cognitive characteristics and provide an interview outline basis for subsequent interview methods. The interview method was further used to collect data, and the Grounded theory was used to code the interview data. Finally, perception, attention, memory, imagination, thinking, and language were identified as influencing factors that influenced the information needs of preschool children, and detailed explanations were provided for the influencing factors. The third part is based on the relevant theories of cognitive psychology and combines the research results of the previous chapter to design cognitive process mechanisms such as perception, attention, memory, imagination, thinking, and language, with the aim of providing solutions for the strategies in the latter chapter. The fourth part, based on the research results and the mechanism design of the previous chapter, provides targeted suggestions and strategies for information service institutions from six aspects: sensory perception, attention, memory, imagination, thinking, and language,to promote the psychological and physiological health development of preschool children.
