| The modern publishing industry originated in the United States.Harper Publishing House is the first publishing house in the United States to publish all kinds of books,and also the first publishing house in a modern sense.Over the past 200 years from 1817 to the present,Harper Press has gone through American capitalism and the Industrial Revolution,witnessing the commercialization and capitalization of the modern publishing industry.This article takes Harper Publishing House as the research object,adopts literature research and statistical analysis research methods,and comprehensively applies relevant theories such as communication,history,sociology,and economics to comprehensively sort out the development history of Harper Publishing House in the United States.It also classifies and analyzes the book data in the OCLC database.This article is divided into four chapters:The first chapter analyzes the social background and historical conditions for the establishment of Harper Publishing House.Harper Press emerged in the late stages of the Second American War of Independence,and wartime newspapers became a window for the public to express their freedom of speech;With the further liberation of ideology and culture,the public’s demand for reading books and newspapers increased after the war,coupled with the development of the local printing press and paper industry in the United States,and the opening of international merchant ships,all provided favorable conditions for the early publishing industry in the United States.The second chapter summarizes the four stages of the development history of Harper Publishing-In terms of time,Harper Publishing mainly experienced J&J.J.&J.Harper,Harper&Brothers,Harper&Row,and Harper Collins.The first stage is J&J.During the Harper period(1817-1833),Harper Publishing House completed the magnificent transformation from a printer to a publisher,primary market development and primitive accumulation of capital.In terms of technology,they took the lead in adopting standardized printing,pioneering the publication of a series of books in marketing.In terms of copyright,the "Harper Treaty" was recognized by the industry,which also laid the foundation for future international copyright protection laws.At the same time,Harper Publishing actively sought out reading needs,preemptively printing the latest British novels to spark a trend,and acquired other small printing houses,becoming the largest printing publisher in New York.The second stage was the period of the Harper Brothers(1833-1962),during which Haiper Press experienced the glory and decline of the publishing empire.By establishing marketing mechanisms such as travel salespeople,book agents,mail subscriptions,and professional book reviews,Harper continues to expand its market and increase sales.With the advent of the era of mass reading,Harper has continuously updated its product forms in competition with cheap newspapers and magazines,becoming the first publishing house to publish magazines and journals.During the American Civil War,Harper firmly supported the Northern Battlefield and made public contributions to the liberation of black slaves and independence movement in the United States.His "Harper Weekly" also pioneered political satirical comics.However,under the influence of the drawbacks of capitalism,Harper Publishing went bankrupt due to insufficient reserve funds,frequently changed ownership under the management of JPMorgan Chase,and ultimately merged with Row Peterson.The third stage was during the period of Harper and Rowe(1962-1990).With the acceleration of internationalization,the merged Harper and Rowe embarked on a path of international expansion.Haiper initially established international branches in London,Sydney,Canada,and Tokyo,responsible for book business in Europe,Oceania,North America,and Asia.At the same time,Harper Publishing also deeply integrated with American politics,and even influenced the process of the US presidential election.While actively participating in the publication of paperbacks,Harper and Rowe also published electronic typesetting publications for the first time.The fourth stage is the period of Harper Collins(1990 to present),which is currently the world’s largest multinational publishing company and is affiliated with News Corporation of the United States.Harper has once again completed the transformation of digital publishing in the new era.Under the impact of new media such as radio and television,Harper Collins actively explores the e-book market and short video marketing.On the basis of inheriting the value of classic books,he continues to explore new literary fields such as technological novels.Chapter 3 evaluates the cultural impact of Harper’s 200 year development process,selecting samples from the "Harper 200 Classic Books Collection",which was released on the occasion of Harper’s 200th anniversary.Harper invited booksellers and librarians from around the world to select a collection of 200 iconic Harper Collins books-these beloved books inspired people Enriched people’s knowledge and spiritual world,enduring and enduring.Although Harper,as a leader in the modern publishing industry,leads the ideology of the times,continuously adopts the latest technologies and marketing models,helps to improve industry rules,and promotes social change and progress.At the same time,the analysis of Harper’s historical characteristics and the statistics of book reprint data also indicate that the end of Harper’s publishing era highlights the drawbacks of capitalist commercialization.After breaking away from the management of the Harper family,under the development model of deepening capitalization and commercialization,the number and types of classic books by Harper Publishing have significantly decreased.It can be seen that capital expansion and mergers have caused economic and cultural foam,and behind the false prosperity are disorderly competition and the devaluation of cultural values.Chapter 4 explores the main historical development characteristics of Harper Publishing House over the past 200 years.Through analysis,it is found that commercialization and capitalization are the development characteristics that have been running through Harper Publishing House’s development.The process of capitalization and commercialization is also reflected in disordered competition,book commercialization,cultural industrialization,publishing commercialization,and global monopoly.This article explores the historical development of Harper Publishing,extracts the publishing characteristics of Harper at different stages,evaluates the cultural development effect of Harper over the past 200 years,and provides useful reference for the development of China’s publishing industry in the new era. |
