| Color palettes are important design coding elements in graphic design, typically consisting of a set of discrete colors.Existing research indicates that color palettes can elicit emotional resonance and emotionally consistent color palettes have some influence on understanding and analyzing graphic design. To design color palettes that conform to known emotions, designers need to constantly adjust the colors in the palette based on their personal experience and subjective cognition of the relationship between color and emotion, which can be a timeconsuming and laborious process. To improve the efficiency of color palette design, researchers have explored the relationship between color palettes and emotions. For example, researchers used a color frequency index to evaluate the cumulative effect associated with color palettes and explored the association between eight discrete emotions(such as happiness, calmness, and anger)and color palette attributes. However, most studies have focused on exploring the association between individual colors or combinations of colors and discrete emotions, thus it is necessary to study the association between color palettes and continuous emotions. This article proposes establishing a relationship between color palettes and continuous emotions and constructing a computational model based on this relationship. The method aims to predict continuous emotion coordinates from a given color palette.A dataset of artistic paintings was annotated by users to obtain emotion coordinates in a two-dimensional space, which were used to extract different length color palettes.Computational models were constructed based on emotion coordinates and color palettes with the same length.Feature matrices were proposed to identify important features for the model.A multi-task regression model was trained using emotion coordinates and color features to predict continuous emotion coordinates. An emotion-driven color palette design system was developed to allow users to input target emotions and obtain optimized color palettes. To evaluate the effectiveness of this article’s method, both qualitative and quantitative evaluation methods were used to evaluate the effectiveness and generalization of the computational model, and the emotion-driven algorithm optimization results were displayed to demonstrate its application in graphic design and visualization. |
