| The rapid development of the Internet has made time increasingly fragmented and flexible. However,as the pace of social development continues to accelerate, individuals are being held hostage in society and their demand for time continues to grow, making time management an urgent need for individuals. With the continuous advancement of media technology, people have gradually entered the era of mediated survival, and time management software has emerged to quantify self and time with technical principles. These software programs, with their quantified self and self-tracking techniques, provide effective help for individual time management and facilitate the process of individual-mediated time management. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how individuals manage their time with the help of time management software, what psychological mechanisms are involved in this practice, how they construct their self-identity,and what kind of self-identity they construct. This thesis uses in-depth interviews, participant observation, and theories of self-identity,self-representation,and quantified self to first analyze the basic situation of individuals’ use of time management software, and then follows the logic of the process of constructing self-identity,loss of self-identity,and reflection on self-identity in the process of using time management software. The whole thesis takes the self-identity of individuals in the process of using time management software as the main line, and explores the self-perception and self-identity of individuals in this process by taking various behavioral characteristics and performance in the process of using as a window. The main analysis is how users construct their self-identity and what kind of self-identity they have constructed in this process, and how individuals can better use the medium to manage their time and plan their daily lives. The first chapter introduces the basic situation of users’ exploit of time management software.Firstly,it introduces the types and characteristics of the popular time management software in the market;secondly,it introduces the motivation of users’ exploit of time management software, including four reasons for improving time efficiency, enhancing self-awareness,constructing media rituals, and maintaining social relationships.Chapter two analyzes the self-identity construction process of time management software users. The study is carried out from the aspects of "self-construction" of self-presentation and self-regulation,"other-construction" of inviting supervision and social interaction, and the relationship between individual and group identity is analyzed. The relationship between individual identity and group identity is also analyzed. The types of self-identity constructed by time management users are further analyzed. The third chapter analyzes the self-identity disorientation of time management software users in the process of time management using the media from three levels: false self-identity,negative self-identity,and alienated self-identity.Chapter four reflects on the self-identity of time management software users and analyzes the underlying reasons for the loss of self-identity,including the lack of subjectivity due to over-reliance on the media, the imbalance between the "main self" and the "guest self",and the imbalance between the "front presentation" and the "guest self".It also puts forward corresponding suggestions from three aspects: enhancing the subject’s awareness, clarifying the purpose of time management, and realizing self-intrinsic identity. |
