Target selection is one of the most basic tasks in the field of human-computer interaction, and ray-based pointing selection is currently the most commonly used target selection method in virtual reality environments. However, there are many problems with the ray-based selection method, which has a long selection time when selecting small objects or distant objects, and has a low accuracy when selecting dense and obstructed objects. How to improve the completion time and accuracy of target selection in 3D scenes is an urgent problem that needs to be solved urgently. Therefore, this paper proposes two target selection technologies based on raycasting in virtual reality environment, which use the dynamic area cursor method and the secondary selection method of two-hand interaction to improve the completion time and accuracy of target selection, and improve the interactive experience of users in virtual reality scenes.Providing a fast, accurate way to acquire objects is important for designing virtual reality tools and applications. The first selection technique called Fan Ray,a selection method that combines a fan selection area and raycasting, where the fan area is determined based on the speed and direction of the handle controller. This selection method dynamically selects the target closest to the raycasting in the direction of movement during the movement, without controlling the contact collision selection of the raycasting and the object, which improves the selection speed by shortening the travel distance, and also avoids the problem that small objects are difficult to accurately obtain, and improves the user’s comfort. The second selection technology is to use the interaction mode of bimanual, through the non-dominant hand to emit conical ray for the initial screening of the target object area and the dominant hand to emit raycasting to accurately select the target selection method in the area after the initial screening, called Bi Cone Ray.This is a classic secondary selection technique, which can effectively select objects in dense environments in three-dimensional space, especially targets under occlusion. This selection method has a significant improvement in accuracy, and introduces bimanual interaction, which can increase the user’s interaction operation and interactive experience. After completing the design of the two target selection technologies,we also designed special experiments to analyze the characteristics of their respective technologies, evaluated and compared the proposed selection technologies with the more commonly used and influential selection technologies in the field, and subjectively analyzed the use and feelings of the two selection technologies. The experimental results show that the two technologies proposed in this paper are target selection methods with improved performance in the virtual reality environment, and can bring better interactive behavior and experience to users.
