With the extension and expansion of the general-branch library, the urban public reading space with the public library as the core has became the center of cultural exchange and the main position of urban public reading. In recent years,Shanghai’s public cultural services have entered a new stage of high-quality development. The public reading system is booming, and the public reading space is changing with each passing day.The rise of regional and thematic characteristic reading spaces such as street libraries, community libraries, and new urban public reading spaces has provided the public with a variety of choices for reading, learning, and leisure venues, constantly highlighting the cultural spirit and character of Shanghai’s urban culture However, the development of things is not always smooth. In recent years, the urban public reading spaces is facing the situation of inefficient services and low user enthusiasm, and it is urgent to seek transformation ideas. Therefore,to achieve accurate matching of supply and demand in public cultural services,it is necessary to proceed from the demand side, deeply explore the real needs of users, correct the development direction of public reading space, and achieve accurate supply.Regarding the research on urban public reading space, domestic scholars mainly focus on the fields of spatial design layout, operation mode, spatial transformation, etc.,while foreign scholars’ research is divided into three categories: one is about the relationship between library space and user needs, the other is about the design of library space, and the third is about the layout of library space. The existing research mostly discusses the factors that can improve the service efficiency of urban public reading space from the perspective of supply side, less considering the relationship between user demand and spatial services. From a demand side perspective, this article explores the current situation of spatial services in Shanghai’s urban public reading space.Firstly, this paper analyzes the construction of public reading spaces in Shanghai and the general-branch library models.Using the method of spatial analysis, this paper comprehensively analyzed the number, coverage area, and service population density of Shanghai’s urban public reading space, and found that the overall layout of Shanghai’s urban public reading space still presents a "banded aggregation, decentralized distribution" pattern. The aggregation effect is evident in the central urban area, and there is a lack of reading space in some areas of the suburbs, which further illustrate the distribution characteristics of Shanghai’s urban public reading space.Secondly, based on text mining technology, this paper analyzes the users’ reviews of Shanghai urban public reading spaces.By mining the review texts of 248 Shanghai urban public reading spaces with user review data from Dianping.com and Gaode Map,and using word frequency analysis,LDA topic analysis, and emotional orientation analysis, this article obtains the user’s focus on the reading space and the user’s emotional orientation.Based on the distribution characteristics and user evaluation characteristics of Shanghai urban public reading space, this paper summarizes the development achievements and current problems of Shanghai urban public reading space services from a demand side perspective. This article combines the distribution characteristics and user evaluation characteristics of Shanghai urban public reading space, and summarizes the development achievements and current problems of Shanghai urban public reading space services from a demand side perspective.Based on the results of text analysis and classification, the Lib QUAL+TM model is improved to generate a user satisfaction questionnaire.Users of public libraries and street libraries in Pudong New Area,Putuo District, and Xuhui District are selected as the survey objects to explore the influencing factors of different dimensions on overall user satisfaction.Combined with user interviews, suggestions are made to improve the service quality of Shanghai’s urban public reading space. The research results show that the current services of Shanghai’s urban public reading space, with public libraries as the core, are basically mature.Overall, the first is that the general-branch library systems have basically achieved full coverage, but the quality of spatial services is uneven, resulting in regional imbalances. The second is that the design of architectural space has received considerable attention and affection, while the reading atmosphere of the internal space has caused dissatisfaction among users. The third is that spatial resources can meet users’ information needs, but there are some deviations between the content provided and users’ needs. The fourth is that the attitude of staff affects users’ judgments, and the development momentum of the spatial service team has not yet met users’ requirements.Based on the research results, development suggestions are proposed from four aspects: external services, internal space, service resources, and staff: first, strengthen the service effectiveness of street/community libraries, and promote standardization of library construction;Second,it is necessary to clarify the standards for space use and improve internal space planning;Third, timely update service resources and expand channels for activities;Fourth, improve the staff training mechanism, enhance librarians’ service awareness, and fifth, improve indoor guidance signs, and expand access to information resources.
