The Analysis Of The Construction Of Motherland Image In Taiwan Ren Jian Magazine

Ren Jian magazine(1985-1989)recorded the history before and after the lifting of Martial law in Taiwan Area by documentary reportage and photography.With its leftism-humanism care,Ren Jian had profoundly influenced social movements in Taiwan’s 1980 s.As a magazine led by Chen Yinzhen,a unificationisim-leftist writer,Ren Jian was faced with anti-communism and separatism in Taiwan.Meanwhile,Chinese mainland was under through a new trend of thought in 1980 s.Despite that,few researches focused on how Ren Jian constructed the media image of Chinese mainland and interacted with different discourses of China.Besides,unificationism-leftists now have been marginalized in the society of Taiwan,which makes related study necessary and urgent.This study uses text analysis as the method to study 86 reports about Chinese mainland of Ren Jian.The main purpose of this study is to find out how Ren Jian constructed the image of motherland,Chinese mainland,and the interactions between different discourses.The study first analyzes the three actors in Taiwan’s news field,including Dangwai(outside Kuomintang)magazines,left-wing magazines,KMT propaganda,and the emerging middle class as their audiences.Secondly,it analyzes the construction of three kinds of motherland images: national,popular,cultural and political.The motherland as a nation interpellated the national identity of the middle class through landscape photography and was placed in a broader third-world context.As the motherland of people,it was constructed through the inseparable relationship in terms of blood,belief,and economy.The motherland as culture and politics constructed the common mission of intellectuals on both sides to explore the way of the development of motherland.This study finds that the reports of motherland in Ren Jian revealed and challenged the anti-communism ideology in Taiwan.The study also finds that humanism became shared value of intellectuals on both side of the strait.Despite this,Ren Jian opposed separatism on one hand,kept a distance from the trend of liberalization in Chinese mainland on the other.The interactions reflect the trough of the socialism movement and gradual opening of capitalism globalization at the end of cold war,as well as the concept of national unity,socialism and the third world in Ren Jian in that changing era.
