Research On The Significance Of Quantified-self Data Text

With the help of smart wearables and related mobile devices,people can self-track their personal data to develop a deeper understanding of themselves-the quantified self.Quantified Self data changes the way individuals exist,expanding the patterns of relationships between people and themselves and society,and the external control embodied in the data becomes increasingly powerful and complex.Quantified self data is not only a presentation of big data technology,but also a system of meaning made up of rules and symbols that have a social interpretative value.This study focuses on the evolution of the meaning of quantified self data,exploring the process of presentation and interpretation of quantified self data texts,and analyzing the socio-textual meaning of their production.The study firstly deduces the evolution of the connotation of quantified self data from big data technology to data text through literature research and content analysis,and explores what socio-textual characteristics and meaning transformation mechanisms quantified self data texts have.Secondly,the process of producing quantified self data texts is explored.The production process of quantified self data texts is the process of encoding the meaning of metadata,and certain socio-textual meanings are generated in the production process.Next,the linguistic structure of the quantified self data texts is examined through the literature research method,content analysis and in-depth interviews,and the socio-linguistic structure,i.e.social control,implicit in the data texts is revealed in the linguistic structure of the texts.Finally,the social meaning interpretation characteristics of the data texts are analyzed.The meaning interpretation process of the data texts is a process of fusion of the textual and recipient’s perspectives,and the fused new perspective becomes a new starting point for understanding and interpretation.The study concludes that the quantified self data text is a social text with independent interpretative value,and has social text characteristics such as autonomy,intentionality,dialogue and intertextuality,while the rule code and media reproduction together constitute the meaning transformation mechanism of the data text.In the process of data text production,the complex metadata is transformed into a valuable data text accepted by users through selective collection,data interpretation and analysis,and visual presentation,generating social textual meanings such as symbolization of the body,objectification and extra-digital subjects.Data collection rules,data analysis criteria and visual presentation preferences constitute the linguistic structure of the data text,and implicit in the linguistic structure of the text is the social discourse of self-control and control of others in the data text,where practical activities aimed at strengthening self-control ultimately lead towards digital labor.Finally,the process of interpreting the quantified self data text is a process of fusion of the transmitter’s and the recipient’s fields of vision,with the recipient performing the next ’recoding’ based on the results of the decoding.
