As an experiential activity,tourism plays an important role in people’s understanding of local customs and learning about history and culture.With the popularity of visual media,"cloud tourism" has become an emerging way of travel,and people can travel around the world without leaving home through TV and the Internet,truly realizing "sitting on the ground and traveling 80,000 miles a day,patrolling the sky and seeing a thousand rivers",and completing an "immersive" trip."immersive" travel.Under the impact of the wave of entertainment,variety shows began to travel as a topic of choice,in the 1990 s,"Zhengda Variety Show" and other early cultural travel variety shows had been deeply popular.Since then,the development of China’s cultural and travel variety shows has probably gone through four stages: the budding period,the development period,the trough period and the current climax period.At present,under the guidance of both market and policy,the topics of cultural travel variety shows have gradually transformed from showing local humanities to combining with traditional culture.In 1975,American communication scholar James Carey put forward the ritual view of communication,breaking the mainstream Western concept at that time-the transmission view of communication.He viewed communication as a kind of ritual,emphasized the communication and sharing of information,and proposed that communication is of great significance in social integration.Cultural and travel variety shows have typical ritualistic features in communication.The shows show the connotation of traditional culture through travel,use a variety of camera languages to attract viewers to participate in an on-screen ritual carnival,promote different circles to establish the same beliefs,thus provoking people’s emotional resonance,breaking geographical limitations,and strengthening national culture and geographical identity.This paper takes the two popular cultural travel variety shows "The Shape of Culture" and "GLORY IS BACK! " series,and takes James Carey’s "ritual view of communication" as the main theoretical basis to study the development status of cultural travel variety shows using case study,textual reading and comparative analysis.This paper is divided into five parts.In the introductory part,the background and significance of the study,the current situation of the study,the research method,and the content and innovation of the study are sorted out;the first chapter first defines the concept of cultural and travel variety shows,then analyzes the fit between cultural and travel variety shows and the ritual view,and sorts out the two variety shows;the second chapter deeply analyzes the ritualized construction of cultural and travel variety shows from four perspectives: symbol,space,process,and people;the third chapter analyzes the ritualized construction of cultural and travel variety shows from four perspectives.The third chapter analyzes the impact of cultural and travel variety shows on individuals,culture and society through the construction of communication rituals from three dimensions:identity,transmission and maintenance;the fourth chapter analyzes the problems in the current communication of such shows and puts forward relevant development suggestions.The final section concludes with a review of the whole paper,summarizing the completion of the thesis and reflecting on the shortcomings of the current study,as well as offering prospects for the future development of cultural and travel variety programs.
