With the prosperity of material civilization nowadays, the development of cultural civilization is very important. The construction of urban cultural space is driven by the times and needed by the people. As a space with a strong cultural atmosphere, independent bookstores are an important position for promoting reading culture,a key carrier of urban culture,a cultural sanctuary where readers’ ideas collide, and a part of urban cultural space.Against the background of the rapid rise of the Internet and information technology, digital reading and the epidemic’s strong impact on physical bookstores, independent bookstores continue to play an important role as "urban cultural landmarks" and play an important role in the enrichment and dissemination of urban culture.Independent bookstores not only explore and integrate local cultural heritage, but also carry the local humanistic spirit and cultural connotation.Located in the Central Plains,Henan Province has profound cultural resources,as the capital city of Henan Province,Zhengzhou has seen high-quality political, economic, and cultural development, and the dissemination of urban culture is inseparable from the construction of urban cultural spaces. In this context,it is of strong practical significance to study the cultural space construction of independent bookstores.Through the lens of media geography, independent bookstores can be viewed as a collection of media that can acquire cultural meaning through internal spatial symbolic interaction, integration of the external environment, and media transmission, thus forming a cultural space where the material and the spiritual coexist. This paper will study the current situation of the construction of the cultural space of independent bookstores in Zhengzhou City from the perspective of media geography, taking "the Production of Space" of Henri Lefebvre as the cornerstone and adopting the fieldwork method,in-depth interview method, and text analysis method to study the construction of its cultural space and derive four factors that influence the construction of the cultural space of independent bookstores through the analysis of grounded theory:"Cultural community","Cultural ecology","Media resources"and"Market pressure. The "Cultural community" as the main body of independent bookstores, their behaviors, activities and thoughts jointly lead the construction and development of the cultural space of independent bookstores.Under the impact of digital publishing, independent bookstores have been transformed and are no longer just reading spaces, but a "Cultural ecology" composed of spatial environment, symbols, cultural exchange and consumption, where special geographical environments, symbolic spatial symbols and unique cultural ideas depict the shape of cultural space. The invisibility of the media space weakens the mass difference and dissolves the boundary between real and imaginary space, and the media practice of independent bookstores extends the cultural space. The market environment has a regulatory role in the construction of the cultural space of independent bookstores, helping the process of constructing the cultural space of independent bookstores to find a balance between business and culture in order to achieve the sustainable development of the cultural space of independent bookstores. This paper will combine these factors to explore the path of constructing the cultural space of independent bookstores in order to realize the co-prosperity of space and culture.
