Research On Michael Gorman’s Thoughts Of Library Science

Michael Gorman was born in England in 1941,He is a famous librarian,cataloguer,and proponent of the Five New Laws of Libranianship.This paper summarizes and analyzes Gorman’s main librarianship ideas and their main influence and status through his books,articles and other major works,others’ evaluation of him,and the main influences at home and abroad,and draws inspiration for the development of librarianship in China through the summary of his ideas.Gorman was not only engaged in library affairs,but also served as a library manager in the later years.During the management period,he continuously practiced his librarianship ideas,and at the same time,he enhanced and expanded his horizons,and his ideas had certain influence on the development of American librarianship,and they have certain representative significance.In this paper,we use documentary,historical and comparative methods to study Gorman’s librarianship,and search foreign databases to collect 88 books,articles and other related works(see Appendix),the main of his librarianship ideas can be divided into five parts:cataloging ideas,librarianship Career ideas,library core value theory,librarianship education ideas,and librarianship new technology ideas.He believes that cataloging should be an important part of library professional learning,and every librarian should master and possess this skill.The library Career thought is mainly reflected in the New Laws of Libranianship proposed by Gorman on the basis of Ranganathan,which is standing in the new context of the times and has important significance to the development of library business.Gorman’s core values of libraries point out that libraries are institutions that provide shelter and means of self-education for civilians,and the essence of libraries will not change and will continue to exercise this function.The thoughts of library education states that library education should be a complete system of knowledge structure,not a single study of one of the contents,and that it is possible to use traditional and novel teaching methods to deliver the curriculum.The idea of new technology in librarianship points out that new technology is only a means of library work,and one should not blindly be a technology maniac,but reasonably apply new technology to the development of librarianship and actual library work.Through the systematic combing and understanding of Western librarian Michael Gorman,we can further understand the history of Western librarianship and academic thought,and provide new contents for the study of the history of librarianship in China,and at the same time provide new ideas and directions for the development of library business in China...
