Binocular gloss is the perceptual result of the human eyes’ perception of the surface gloss appearance of an object in stereoscopic display, and glossiness is a critical element for reproducing realistic three-dimensional scenes in stereoscopic displays. In stereoscopic displays, the surface gloss of an object can be reproduced by using binocular color differences as cues.To avoid abnormal depth perception,it is necessary to ensure that the lightness information in the left and right views is consistent. This thesis proposes a modulation method that focuses only on the color attributes of chroma and hue to generate binocular glossiness. The aim is to investigate the influence of binocular color difference information on glossiness for complex stereoscopic images. This method is based on the equal luminance plane in the CIELAB color space, and introduces a color difference modulation scale parameter to perform binocular modulation of chroma difference, hue difference and both chroma and hue differences for three different types of stereoscopic images. In the psychophysical experiment,a Latin square design was used to determine the stimulus presentation order, and 15 subjects were invited to rate the glossiness of 99 stereoscopic images generated by the three modulation methods. The quantitative ratings of glossiness were obtained for stereoscopic images with different chroma, hue, and both chroma and hue differences. The results show,(1)In stereoscopic display, all three designed binocular color difference modulation methods successfully elicited the glossiness of complex stereo images in subjects, and the glossiness intensity in the brain increased with the increase of color difference in the viewed images.(2)Under the three different mappings of chroma difference, hue difference, and both chroma and hue differences, there were differences in the glossiness of the stereo images among subjects, but without significant.(3)The glossiness ratings of the modulated stereo images were not affected by the image types, but were related to the color difference modulation scale. The larger the color difference modulation scale, the higher the glossiness ratings of the modulated stereo images by subjects.Based on the above results, the thesis establishes an objective prediction model for color difference modulation scale and glossiness score using Weber-Fechner’s law.The model can predict the subject’s binocular glossiness rating based on the size of the color difference modulation scale. The research results show that when the scale is greater than 1.13,the glossiness of the generated stereoscopic image will be significantly enhanced. This can help guide the extension of scene representation in stereo display devices, reduce the rendering cost of reproducing stereoscopic gloss, and provide experimental data support for the development of stereoscopic image enhancement technology.
