Research On Public Libraries Supporting Citizen Science Development In China

Nowadays,with the rise and development of the open science movement of sharing,collaboration and data-intensive,the traditional scientific research paradigm has also changed,from the classic "laboratory science" to the "public science" stage,and the general public has begun to join the scientific research team.Citizen science practice has become a common practice internationally,and countries such as Europe and the United States have supported it by setting up platforms,compiling guidelines,developing tools,and establishing associations.In contrast,citizen science has not yet formed a large-scale coverage in China,and there are still key obstacles in practice areas,policy planning,project structure,data management,practice platforms,team building,and the power of public participation.Under the wave of citizen science development,the public library is the knowledge hub of the community where it is located,which has a wider range of service groups and information services.It can promote citizen science to go to the grassroots level of the community and form a stable and sustainable development foundation,thereby promoting the in-depth development of citizen science.At present,Shanghai Library has taken the lead in actively exploring in the field of citizen science.Using its rich collection resources,it has launched the first citizen science project in the Chinese library industry—the Sheng Xuanhuai Archives Transcription Project.In addition,although other public libraries in China have not yet directly involved in citizen science activities,they have also used makerspaces,intelligent science popularization and other forms to fully carry out public scientific literacy education.It lays a foundation for the public to pay attention to scientific activities,participate in scientific practice,and also provides indirect support for their participation in citizen science projects.Relying on the good environment for citizen science development in America,many public libraries have carried out a series of citizen science support practices,including the development of extension project kits,training and education,publicity and promotion activities and the practice of characteristic citizen science projects,and building a national network of public science libraries,which have achieved good practical results and accumulated many successful experiences.These experiences are helpful for public libraries in my country to support public science development It has a certain reference effect,which including : focusing on supporting the entire process of citizen science projects,focusing on building public libraries into community hubs for citizen science,focusing on promoting cross-border cooperation of multiple subjects,focusing on the evaluation of practical results and the sustainable operation of practical projects.Based on the status quo of public science development,current status of public library support in China and drawing on the advanced experience of America,Chinese public libraries can cultivate the scientific quality and ability of the public,carry out project publicity and promotion activities,carry out special practice activities,manage public scientific data,and evaluate project results.to support citizen science practice.At the same time,in order to ensure the smooth development of these paths,the following measures need to be taken: playing the leading role of public library authorities and industry associations,forming a team of professional librarians,strengthening the infrastructure construction in the library,broadening the channels of funding sources,strengthening exchanges and cooperation.Ultimately,it will promote the widespread popularization and sustainable development of citizen science in China.
