Based on the virtual reality interaction paradigm, this study explores the impact of the design of exhibition space layout on the user’s visitor experience. The study explores the impact of differences in exhibition space layout design on visitor experience from three aspects based on the basic elements of solid and void in space design, simple layout forms and their co-visibility differences, and the spatial perception of the overall space layout sequence, respectively. The study mainly adopts the comparative experiment method to examine and explore the differences and associations caused by the design.Experiment 1 aims to investigate the effect of the ratio of solid to void in the virtual reality exhibition space on visitors’ spatial distance perception and sense of presence;Experiment 2 aims to investigate the effect of the basic spatial layout on visitors’ memory experience;Experiment 3 aims to explore the association between the spatial perception in the spatial sequence and the exhibition’s communication effect as well as users’ sense of enjoyment.Through the analysis and discussion of quantitative data and qualitative materials, the three experiments draw effective conclusions and strategies that can guide the design of virtual reality exhibition spaces. The conclusion of Experiment 1 shows that when designing the layout of virtual reality exhibition space, the central solid can be designed smaller in the post-visit space to enhance visitors’ visual depth perception, especially for spaces that need to create a sense of distance;the conclusion of Experiment 2 shows that in spaces with continuous moving lines and homogeneous exhibit contents, exhibits that are not visually stimulating but need to be memorized should be placed at the beginning or end of the moving sequence In order to optimize the memory experience. The results of Experiment 3 show that different spatial perceptions can be designed through different spatial layout sequences, which also enrich the spatial interest and,to a certain extent, influence the learning effect and enjoyment of visitors to the image-based display content. In addition, increasing the spatial perception of spatial sequences can make visitors pay more attention to the construction of exhibition space and image-based exhibits. In summary, this study proposes some design strategies through the empirical study of virtual reality exhibition space layout, including the design of solid-to-void ratio, the consideration of layout motion with its co-visibility,and the design of spatial layout sequence. These strategies can optimize the user’s cognitive experience, memory experience, information acquisition effect and sense of enjoyment, providing valuable guidance and suggestions for the design of virtual reality exhibition space.
