Black Swan events such as the COVID-19 pandemic have led to drastic changes in the global environment,posing challenges and opportunities for the survival and development of enterprises.Faced with the situation of environmental turbulence,labor shortage and supply imbalance caused by the epidemic,enterprises need ambidextrous innovation capability.While maintaining or steadily advancing the existing market and customers,enterprises should explore future markets and customers to ensure that they will not be abandoned by any era.As the key team that determines the development of the organization and affects the performance of the organization,the top management team is the core of the enterprise’s pursuit of ambidextrous innovation capability.However,the faultline of the top management team has favorable or unfavorable effects on the information exchange,cooperation intention,joint decision and other aspects,which affects the ambidextrous innovation capability of the enterprise.In the existing literature on the composition of top management team and ambidextrous innovation,more studies are made on the impact of single attribute on ambidextrous innovation,and there is a lack of discussion on attribute combination.Although some studies take faultline and ambidextrous innovation as the theme,they only discuss the impact of faultline of top management team on exploration innovation and exploitation innovation respectively,which is not consistent with the core idea of ambidextrous innovation.Secondly,in the study of the faultline of the TMT,CEO is often considered as a whole in TMT,ignoring the role of CEO in offsetting or strengthening the favorable and unfavorable effects.Considering the above limitations,this paper takes the behavioral integration of TMT as the theoretical perspective,and CEO career variety and environmental complexity as the moderating variables,divides TMT faultline into relationship-related faultline and task-related faultline,and discusses the impact of the two faultlines on enterprise ambidextrous innovation respectively.Through data collection,the research samples of 532 manufacturing enterprises in Shanghai and Shenzhen A-shares from 2012 to 2018 are determined.Stata 16 is used for data analysis of the samples,and empirical conclusions are drawn as follows:First,There is an inverted U-shaped relationship between the TMT relationship-related faultline and enterprise ambidextrous innovation,and the relationship is significantly adjusted by environmental complexity,that is,with the increase of environmental complexity,the inverted U-shaped curve becomes flat.Second,The TMT task-related faultline positively affects the enterprise’s ambidextrous innovation.The larger the task-related faultline is,the stronger the ambidextrous innovation capability of enterprises will be.Environmental complexity negatively moderated the positive relationship,but CEO career variety had a significant positive moderating effect.Finally,the robustness analysis verifies the reliability of the conclusion.Through theoretical analysis and empirical research,this thesis has the following theoretical contributions:1.In this thesis ambidextrous innovation is regarded as a whole,and the top management team faultline is taken as the explanatory variable to study the impact of attribute combination on ambidextrous innovation,which is a further supplement and improvement of the research on ambidextrous innovation and top management team faultline,and helps to clarify the internal process of the effect of team composition on enterprise ambidextrous innovation.2.This thesis has contributed to the literature on organizational theory with environment as the background by showing the different moderating effects of environment complexity on the relationship-related faultline and task-related faultline of top management team.3.In this thesis,CEO career variety is taken as a moderating variable to further demonstrate the role of CEO in the top management team,which is a supplement to the upper echelons theory. |
