Since the reform and opening up,China’s economy has developed rapidly and achieved remarkable results. The overall economic strength has jumped to the second place in the world. However, behind the rapid economic development,China has also exposed the problems of unbalanced and insufficient economic development between developed and underdeveloped regions. As the main body of economic development in underdeveloped areas,start-ups play an important role in driving employment, promoting economic growth, and achieving full and coordinated development among regions. The external development environment of start-ups in underdeveloped areas is far less than that in developed areas.Coupled with the inherent disadvantages of start-ups,the development results of start-ups in underdeveloped areas are not satisfactory. In the face of the difficult reality, there are still some successful entrepreneurial teams.Summarizing their success laws,it is found that entrepreneurial vigilance and entrepreneurial opportunity identification play a positive role in promoting the development of start-ups and improving enterprise performance in underdeveloped areas.Based on entrepreneur discovery theory and entrepreneurial process theory, this study explores the relationship among entrepreneurial alertness, entrepreneurial opportunity identification and start-up performance in underdeveloped regions.Firstly, according to the review and sorting of relevant theories and literature, the connotation and dimension of entrepreneurial alertness, entrepreneurial opportunity identification and new venture performance are defined and divided respectively.Secondly, the relationship between entrepreneurial alertness, entrepreneurial opportunity identification and start-up performance in less developed regions is explored, research hypotheses are proposed, and a theoretical model is established with entrepreneurial opportunity identification as a mediator variable, entrepreneurial alertness as an independent variable, and start-up performance as a dependent variable. Then, questionnaires were used to collect relevant data, and the hypotheses were verified by direct influence test and mediation effect test. Finally, the results of hypothesis testing are summarized, and the overall research situation of this paper is reflected. The results show that:(1)entrepreneurial alertness positively affects the performance of new ventures in less developed regions.(2)entrepreneurial alertness positively affects entrepreneurial opportunity identification.(3)entrepreneurial opportunity identification positively affects the performance of new ventures in less developed regions.(4)Entrepreneurial opportunity identification plays a mediating role in the impact of entrepreneurial vigilance on the performance of new ventures in underdeveloped regions. This paper investigates the mechanism and effect of entrepreneurial alertness and entrepreneurial opportunity identification on the performance of new ventures in less developed regions, expands the scope of empirical research on the impact of entrepreneurial alertness on the performance of new ventures in China, and provides fresh cases and empirical data reserve for entrepreneurship research in less developed regions. At the same time, the following suggestions are put forward for the survival and development of new enterprises in less developed areas in the future: entrepreneurs should pay attention to the improvement of their own entrepreneurial awareness;Entrepreneurs should learn from a variety of ways to improve their ability to identify opportunities.
