Exploration Of Luxury Consumption In The Context Of Economic Philosophy

Since ancient times,consumption has been inseparable from human life and is a problem that human society must face.The logic of capital behind the consumption of luxury goods,as an anomaly in the historical development of consumption,has an inescapable role in the development of both people and society.As a major consumer of luxury goods,luxury consumption in China has shown an increasing trend,which on the one hand reflects rising income levels and improved living conditions,and on the other hand has resulted in an infinite climb in consumer desire,leading to a collective enslavement and plundering of consumers.This issue runs counter to the goal of sustainable development and the people’s need for a better life in the new era,and it is therefore a due theoretical and practical task to explore the issue of luxury consumption in contemporary China.Luxury is a concept that has developed historically,going through a process of negation in a moral sense,affirmation in an economic sense and,in modern society,a more dialectical sense.Luxury are luxury goods that often correspond to necessities,and luxury consumption corresponds to consumption of necessities.The key to the exploration of luxury consumption is to return to Marx,whose writings don’t contain a systematic discussion of the theory of luxury consumption,but which are still very rich and meaningful.Based on the theory of need,production and consumption,Marx analyzed the different roles played by luxury consumption in different socio-historical forms.In ancient societies,luxury consumption was more about pleasure,in capitalist societies it played more of a productive role,and in future communist societies the ultimate goal is the development of free individuality.The search for human emancipation is the goal of Marx’s idea of luxury consumption,which Marx believed could only achieve the free and comprehensive development of man if it is completely free from alienated forms.In the process of building socialism with Chinese characteristics,people’s aspirations for a better life have also gained a higher level of demand,and consumption has increasingly become an important means of meeting the needs of a better life.At the same time,luxury consumption has also brought about supply and demand problems,ecological problems,social and spiritual problems,etc.In response,we should adhere to and develop Marx’s idea of luxury consumption,establish a scientific concept of luxury consumption,guide luxury consumption to serve the structural reform on the supply side,create a harmonious ecological environment,and together contribute to a better life in the new era,which is a developable path for luxury consumption in China’s consumption practice.
