China’s export trade has been booming since the reform and opening up,while the total export volume has steadily ranked among the top in the world. However, due to the global division of labor and many other limitations,China has long been at the low end of the global value chain featured by the production of low value-added products. The reduction of the demographic dividend has prompted foreign trade enterprises to move from the primary growth stage of gaining competitive advantage by low prices to the stage of high-quality development. At the same time,China strongly advocates digital transformation, which provides new growth points for enterprises to upgrade their export quality. The reduction of production and trade costs and technology spillover caused by digital transformation will further enhance the quality of enterprises’ exports.Based on the above background, this paper investigates how the digitalization level of enterprises affects export product quality through both theoretical and empirical perspectives.Based on combing the literature, this paper elaborates the overall impact mechanism of the digitalization level on export quality from different perspectives, such as product, capital, information, value and risk, and also analyzes the mediating mechanism of resource allocation. In addition, the paper presents a characteristic factual analysis of the current development of China’s digital economy and exports, and further analyzes the performance of Chinese listed companies. At the empirical test level, based on the panel data of listed companies from 2007 to 2015,the paper constructs a fixed-effects model to test whether the digital transformation of enterprises has a positive effect on export product quality, and assesses the degree of heterogeneity of this effect among enterprises of different quality, enterprises of different ownership and enterprises of different regions, and finally explores the mediating effect model to investigate the impact of the digitalization level of enterprises on export quality.important paths. The empirical results show that improving the digitalization level of enterprises can promote the upgrading of export product quality.Further, low export quality enterprises are more sensitive to digitalization than high export quality enterprises;regionally, the digitalization of enterprises in eastern, central and northeastern regions is beneficial to export quality upgrading, while the effect is not significant in western regions;the positive impact of digital transformation on export quality is more obvious for state-owned enterprises than non-state-owned enterprises. In terms of mechanism analysis, this paper verifies that digitalization can effectively promote export quality improvement by improving enterprise resource allocation efficiency.Accordingly, this paper gives the following recommendations for the research findings: in terms of policy, the government should increase financial and tax support for transforming enterprises, pay attention to cross-regional collaborative development, and strengthen the linkage between industry, academia, and research;at the enterprise level,it should develop digital transformation strategies, optimize digital application scenarios, and actively build digital platforms, while strengthening data security and privacy protection.
