This paper aims to study a kind of high-energy, high-strength propellants (JMZpropellant). The performance and manufacture of JMZ propellant were exploredwidely in this paper. JMZ propellant is made of polyester-uranthane, nitricacidestermixture, RDX, NC and other additives. The base formulation was determined bytheoretical analysis and optimal design of propellant formula. On the basis offormulation design, the process and technical parameter during manufacture, whichinfluenced the mechanical properties of JMZ propellant significantly, were studied. And JMZ propellant with expected prospect of application is manufactured by themethods of extrusion. The burning, thermal decomposition, mechanical andenergetical performance of JMZ propellant were tested and characterized in detail byDSC, closed bomb test, DMA, material test machine, micrograph, drop hammer test, etc. The influence of mechanical performance and burning-performance ofpropellant caused by function degree and molecular weight of PET prepolymer, sortsand content of NC, granularity and content of RDX, content of nitricacidestermixture, bond-link additive were researched and obtained some important relatedrules.Other important discussed contents of this paper are the improvement ofmechanical properties of JMZ propellant by used enhancing-material such asternary-resin. Results show that JMZ propellant with various size and shapes can bemanufactured by traditional extrusion technology. And obtained propellants havehigher energy (propellant force exceeding 1150 kJ/kg) and good mechanicalperformance, especially in low temperature. It can be foreseen that JMZ propellantwill be a sort of new propellant with high-energy and high-strength and expectedapplication prospect.
