With the rapid development of Chinese economy, conflicts between demand and supply in energy resources have been aggravated. To realize Energy-saving and consumption-reduction therefore becomes a significant project with strategic meaning. High intensity-discharge lamp (HID), an energy-saving light source of a new generation, has been widely applied in transportation, civil infrastructure, and factories for its high efficiency and long life. However, HIDs are generally ignited by the traditional 50Hz electromagnetic ballast that bears limitations like high energy consumption, high material consumption and low power factor, etc. Therefore, researchers and experts world-wide are strenuously working to develop the single electronic ballast.This paper discusses HID illumination and power supply system from a new angle with the purpose of saving energy and material, and solves the problem of engineering realization, providing new approaches and technologies for the feasibility of large-scale utility of energy-saving illumination. An electronic ballast with high frequency was firstly developed and then two types of computer simulations were conducted, electric properties modeling simulation and physical-thermal modeling simulation, which proved to be in consistence with actual utility. Thus three novel approaches and technologies for power supply systems of HID electronic ballast were advanced: a centralized HID ballast control system, a centralized HID ballast system with AC power-bus, and a centralized HID ballast system with DC power-bus. This paper presents in chapter three, four and five the research results of the three approaches respectively.1) A centralized HID ballast system with DC power-bus.This paper addresses a novel circuit frame which substitutes the rectifier and filter circuit in series of single ballasts with a total rectifier filter. And the system is driven with DC bus instead of the mains supply. The novel technology can enormously enhance the electric conversion efficiency, and reduces the size and weight of system. Through the adjustment of voltage in DC bus, centralized dimming can be achieved.2) A centralized HID ballast system with AC power-bus.This paper addresses a centralized HID ballast system with 400Hz bus. The ballast system adopts a total frequency-converter to convert 50Hz mains into 400HzPWM, and the PWM wave is further transmitted by a special LC filter into 400Hz sine waveform. With the power-bus, volume and weight reduced ballasts can be driven in parallel. Compared with the traditional 50Hz ballast, the centralized HID ballast system with 400Hz bus is of great advantages: reduction of volume and weight, economization of materials, enhancement of electrical conversion efficiency, saving of energy, and convenience of dimming, etc. 3) A centralized HID ballast control system with Power Line Communication (PLC).This paper addresses the technology of communication through the mains line to achieve centralized detection and control of HID. In this system, control wires are unnecessary and field wiring is convenient. The system applies the Lonworks network technology with special PLC transceiver PLT-22 for flexible communication and network building. The whole system provides great advantages of sensitive detection and reliable communication, etc.This paper discusses at different view of the technologies of HID, its ballast, and its power supply system, proposing the solution to the HID performance and reliability by the power supply with centralized controlling and driving. Especially, the uniqueness in energy-saving is of significance in theory as well as in practice, and there is much prospect of application and market.This paper has shown theorical analysis, simulation, and experimentation of a prototype in laboratory. And the research results in the paper have passed the provincial authentication for technological achievements.
