Objective:1. To study the relationship between the VaD and hypertension, hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia or the different districts of cerebral stroke.2. To study the intervention of Ginkgo biloba extract(EGb) in occurrence and development of VaD.Methods:1. Objects were chosen from first-stroke patients according with Mini-Mental State Examination( MMSE).2. Patients were randomly divided into intervenient and control groups.3. Patients in intervenient group were given Tanaka 40mg tid besides the general treatment . Those in control group only received general treatment. All patients were examined with Mini-Mental State Examination( MMSE)at the time of admission, 1, 3 and 6 months after stroke. VaD diagnosis accorded completely with the criteria in Diagnostic and statistic manual of mental disorders,4th ed.( DSM-â…£). The patient's nerval function was also judged with Activities of Daily Life(ADL).4. Stroke dangerous factors, such as hypertension , hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia and the cerebral districts of stroke were listed. Results :1.There was no significant difference in the incidence of hypertension, hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemia between thetwo groups.2. There was close relationship between the cerebral area of stroke and VaD occurrence. 3. VaD incidence of intervenient group was lower than that in control group.4. No side effect was found in intervention group.Conclusion:1. It is favourable for EGb to prevent occurring and developing in VaD after stroke.2. There is not close relationship between hypertension , hyperlipidemia or hyperglycemia and the VaD incidence in the observed patients. 3. VaD was easily developed in patient whose stroke occurred in intellect-related region of the brain.
