Objective: To study the effect of Xiongshao Capsule(XSC) on vascular remodeling of cervical atherosclerosis (AS) patients and experimental AS model and discuss its mechanisms.Methods: In the clincal study, randomized and controlled method was applied by means of vascular ultrasound as the chief index to observe the effect of XSC on cervical AS patients. In the experimental study, the rabbit segmental AS model was established by injury endothelium of rabbits' abdominal aorta by balloon dilation with high fatty diet for 6 weeks afterwards. The dynamic vascular remodeling course of AS model and the effect of XSC was analyzed with quantitative histologic methods. The methods of immunohistochemistry, radioinmiunity, colorimetry, in situ hybridization were applied to study the mechanisms of XSC. In both clinical and experimental study, probucol was served as control.Results: Both intimal hyperplasia and pathological vascular remodeling were involved in the course of AS. XSC was demonstrated to have function of regulating blood lipid, inhibiting platelet aggregation, affecting the content of vaso-active substance, regulating and controlling proliferation and apoptosis of smooth muscle cell(SMC), improving configuration and function of endothelial cell, regulating the content and arrangement ofcollagen, inhibiting intimal thickening, improving pathological vascular remodeling and shrinking AS plaque.Conclusion: Pathological vascular remodeling was one of important links during the course of AS and it was a main factor that lead to stenosis of lumen. XSC has good effect on preventing and treating AS with regulating vascular remodeling as one of its mechanisms.
