Asthma,with many different titles, is a common, variable, refractory and recurring disease, which has a good therapeutic effect with Chinese medicine.Therefore, it is very important to study on asthma in TCM.Althoufht asthma was first appeared in the Southern Song Dynasty, there has been a long time since asthma was known. The ancient physicians has accumulated a wealth of theoretical and practical experience on asthma, created a number of effective treatment and prescriptions for asthma,left a lot of literature on asthma. All these is precious and rich heritage. Based on the literature on asthma before the Republic of China, the research which is about the literature and academic history was done. There are five periods in asthma's history, pre-Qin to the Three Kingdoms Period, Jin Sui and Tang Dynasties, Song and Yuan Dynasties, the Ming Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty. It also can be callled the germination stage, the growth stage, the flowering stage, the unripe fruit stage and the ripe fruit stage. This paper has a deep discusstion on asthma'a history in the five stages including the characteristic and the experiences.This paper has three parts. First of all, it is the development and the meanings of the titles of asthma, which is a good foundation. The second part is the main part of this paper. It gives a full account of the different characteristic of the Chinese medicine's development and the TCM's theory during the five stages. It also introduces the TCM's theory of asthma, which includes name, pathogeny. differential diagnosis, syndrome differentiation, treatment, preventation and clinical experience. The development of asthma's theory is also involved. The final part is based on the second part. There are some doubts and difficulties on asthma's theory. This part is just on it.
