Research Background and GoalAs a historian concept,"Contemporary" means the era after founding of PRC.1949-1979is a critical stage for Contemporary TCM development. In this period, Traditional Chinese Medicine get rid of the discrimination and question, was re-consider as a complete medical system which is independent and parallel with Western Medicine. Clinical services and academic research was on the right track and made great development.1949-1979was also been considered as a run-in period for the PRC s TCM policy, from "Scientification of TCM","Western Medicine Studies Chinese Medicine" to "The Integration of Chinese and Western Medicine", different national policies was made and canceled in succession; from "The Innovation of Tradition Chinese Medicine" to "Inheriting and Developing Medical Heritage" and "Pay Attention to Practice in Academic Research", focuses was changing in the academic research. As the proverb saying:Learning from history. This research intended to record the valuable historical data and details for the important academic figures, events and achievement, reveal the transmutation of academic research and summary the enlightment to the future TCM academic development.Prof. Deng Tietao said:"Medical Research couldn't be isolated from its geographical and social background." Regional medical research is a rising field which caught more focuses for significance role in medical history and literature research. Guangdong has a long history of using and research TCM. At the same time, Guangdong was also the central part of Western medicine and cradle of TCM academic innovation and modern TCM education for its earlier contact with Western modern civilization. Guangdong played very important role in all the TCM innovation and great academic discussions after the founding of PRC, at the same time the research of regional in medicine also made great achievement which was driven by the economy and cultural prosperity in Ming and Qing dynasties. This research intended to find the unique characters and its formation of Guangdong contemporary TCM academic development.In the past, few focuses was on the history of TCM in Hong Kong of which the historical value was recently rising by the publication of some famous doctors. Before1949, Hong Kong and Guangdong had a close communication in TCM clinical and academic activities. Before the World War â…¡, Nearly all the famous TCM doctors in Hong Kong was the immigrant from Guangdong, they promoted the educational, clinical and academic development of TCM. The more significant impact on Hong Kong TCM were made by the famous doctors coming from Shanghai during1949, whose TCM schools and medical works made Hong Kong as the another centre of TCM, besides Mainland. There is no systematical historical record for the important TCM scholars, works, schools and academic activities, this dissertation intend to make systematical research on the significant doctors, medical works, schools and medical organizations in Hong Kong TCM history after World War â…¡.Research Material and Methods1. Documents Research:this part included documents inquiry, collection, identification and editing, etc. Literature is fundamental work carried out in the main method of study, including data collection and collation. There are three sources of the documents refers to this research. The Library of Guangzhou University of TCM is the main source of TCM Journals, monograph, conference paper and government documents during1949-1979; Sun Yat-sen Library is the main source of original copies of government policy and statistical data about TCM, the donation from Dr. Chen Yongguang is main source of the biographies and monographs of the Hong Kong TCM masters, instructions of the important TCM organization. According to the methods and standard of medical history and literature research, the procedure was as below:â‘ acquiring range of materials referring to the research by the relative bibliography;â‘¡getting the necessary materials by lending, recording, photo and converting the essential part into digital document;â‘¢compiling bibliography and indexes for the original material and building a database which could be use to information retrieval. The basic standards of literature research in this dissertation are as below:â‘ all the reference documents is primary document and first edition;â‘¡essential points have the evidences of original document materials.2. Theoretical analysis:this part included classified, analysis, interpretation, normal explanation, comparative study, etc. According to the standards made by "Chinese Journal of Medical History","Chinese Journal of Chinese Medical Literature, this dissertation outlined and made detailed description of famous scholar's life and works, significant policies and events about TCM academic development; refined the academic points of famous doctors and scholars; described the tendencies in the research of single or a group of scholars; made comparison among different viewpoints and explore the causes of their difference.Research ResultsThe results consist of2part and4appendices. Part â…  is about Guangdong TCM academic history during1949-1979which divided into3appendices. Part1.1is about TCM academic development from1949to1953.(1)The historical and political background including formation and content of "TCM Scientification", relative data about the health situation in Guangdong, the unique characters in Guangdong "TCM Scientifiation".(2) Introducing the significant scholars and academic journals.(3) Outlining and detailed descripting the discussions about the value of traditional Chinese medicine theories, the methods and standards of TCM Scientification; Summarizing the main viewpoints in this discussion.(4) Introducing important achievements of TCM Scientification in medical literature collation, theory research, pulse diagnosis, acupuncture and modern extraction of Chinese herbal medicine.(5) The characters of TCM academic development in Guangdong from1949to1953. Part1.2is about TCM academic development from1954to1965.(1) Instruction of two important academic journals:"Guangdong TCM" and "Guangdong Journal of Medicine:TCM Edition".(2)Instruction of Guangdong Committee of TCM Research.(3) Significant paper criticizing the wrong attitude and viewpoints in TCM research.(4)The important achievements in TCM literature research, regional medicine research, basic theory research, clinical research.(5)The characters of TCM academic development in Guangdong from1954to1965. Part1.3is about TCM academic development from1966to1979.(1) Introducing the progress in literature collation, clinical research, experiment about Spleen&Stomach theory of TCM.(2)Introducing achievements in treatment for acute abdomen syndromes, orthopedic manipulation and acupuncture anesthesia by combination of TCM with Western medicine.(3)Introducing the research progress in arteannuin antimalarial agent, tetanic antitoxin made by Chinese herbal medicine, ilexpubesceus treatment for angeitides.(4)Hou Can, Liangzhiying's attempt to explain TCM in the frame of cybernetics, information theory and homeostasis hypothesis.(5) The characters of TCM academic development in Guangdong from1966to1979.Part2is about the history of TCM in Hong Kong which divided into3appendices. Part2.1is about an overview of development of TCM clinical practice, education, organization in Hong Kong. It contains the contents as below:(1)Transmutation of Hong Kong TCM professionals' clinical pattern.(2)Development of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals.(3) Transmutation of Hong Kong TCM education and significant schools.(4)Development of TCM non-government organization and important TCM organization. Part2.2is about basic features of immigrant TCM doctors and their impact on TCM development in Hong Kong.(1)Definition of "Immigrant TCM Doctors".(2)The big scale immigrations of TCM doctors.(3)The brief biography, academic works and achievements of10significant immigrant TCM doctors from Guangdong and other regions of China.(4)Review about the contributions of Immigrant TCM Doctors.Conclus ionStages division of contemporary history of Guangdong TCM development during1949to1979:according to theâ‘ significant TCM policies;â‘¡conversion of mode, focus of academic research;â‘¢significant political events, this era can be divided into three stages.(1)1949to1953:The main policy about TCM academic research is TCM Scientification. Main academic activities are discussion about value of TCM theory, methods and standards of scientification; primary research literature research and medication improvement.1949-1953is the foundation stage.(2)1954to1965:PRC government adopted fresh TCM policies which encourage inheritance and development in academic research, fruitful achievements were made in literature collation, theory discussion, regional medicine and treatment for infection disease.1954-1965is the academic flourishing stage.(3)1966to1979:The mainstream of Guangdong TCM research is exploring treatments for intensive diseases by integration of Chinese and Western medicine because of focus conversion in research. Breakthroughs were made in acute abdomen syndromes, acupuncture anesthesia, bone-setting manipulation, specific therapeutics.1966-1979is breakthtough stage in TCM clinical research.As the dynamic region of TCM academic research, There are distinct features in Guangdong TCM academic development:(1)Clinical practice is the essential guide and driven power to academic development.(2)Government support is the critical power to academic development.(3) The scholars and people's support is sustain power to academic development.(4)Insistence on uniqueness of TCM and carrying forward on the base of inherited. The essential features of Guangdong TCM research were made by the characters as above, which are also the valuable experiences for the future TCM research.
