On Ren(?) Wellek's Poetics

This dissertation, trying to fill the long-exiting gap in the academic research, spares no effort in the systematic study of Rene Wellek (1903-1995), the well-known Western master in literary field, and his poetic exploration.Ever since early 1980's, Wellek has exerted extremely profound influence on Chinese literary theory in the past 20 years.On Rene Wellek's Poetics is the first systematic and profound academic work that studies and interprets Wellek and his literary theoretical system, in attempt to fill the long exiting gap in academic China that there is almost no profound research in this aspect.The basic idea of the dissertation is as follows: the coexistence and fusion of scientism and humanism as the fundamental feature of his systematic poetics, with phenomenologicai approach as its basis, Wellek's theoretic sources consist of Phenomenology, Structuralist linguistics, and New Criticism. Based on the idea regarding "structure" as the core concept, the existence mode of works of art as the logical starting-point, Wellek formed his three theoretic plates that include literary structural ontology, the strata of literary works, and literary approaches.The dissertation, through detailed analyses and particular evidences, raises and illustrates a series of novel and profound ideas and opinions concerning Wellek's literary theories, which may have academic significance and value.The dissertation puts forward some creative opinions about such aspects as sources of Wellek's literary theories, the theory of "texture/structure," "intrinsic study/extrinsic approach," methodology of "perspectivism," "linguistic imperialism," and so-called "Exceeding Wellek."The writer of the dissertation, in the methodology, employs multi-perspective concern and multi-strata comparison to analyze and review Wellek's theoretic system by returning it to the 20th-century background of Western literary theories that, on one hand, are centered around scientism and humanism, and, on the other, lay the emphasis on the sequence of authors-texts-readers. And the strong point of its research methodology could be observed through the fact that micro Wellek study always combined with overall research of his poetics and social context has broken through the limitation of the simplicity of Wellek study.
