The Study Of The Narrative Literature Of Buddhist Scripture And The Novels Of Tang Dynasty

This thesis aimed at the Narrative Literature of Buddhist Scripture and the novels of Tang Dynasty, explored the interaction and influence between Buddhist Scripture and the novels of Tang Dynasty are both belong to the narrative literature. This thesis includes the introduction and four chapters, weighs about 180 thousands words.The introduction firstly addressed itself to literature attribute and the value of the Buddhist Scripture. Both folklore and religion literature are the connotation of Literature of Buddhist Scripture, and they form the important narrative contents and major style of Literature of Buddhist Scripture. The translated literature not only includes the style innovation from Sanskrit to Chinese, but also shows the valuable characteristic of Chinese—translated Buddhist Scripture that acts as the carrier of influence of foreign literatures. Subsequently, established the study orientation and the emphases of this thesis through the retrospect of the academic history. Finally, is the brief description of the study extension and the methods.Chapter 1 is the general introduction of category and distribution of The Narrative Literature of Buddhist Scripture. This chapter is based upon the previous viewpoints, sorted The Narrative Literature of Buddhist Scripture into Biography of Buddha, Ja taka (including Itivrtaka), Nida-na and Avadana, enumerated main classics, outlined the characteristics of contents and form. Thereafter, introduced the literature styles and narrative features of Agama, Vinaya and Mahayana.Chapter 2 is the study for transmit approaches.The development of Buddhist in Tang Dynasty provided a broad social space for the transmission of the Literature of Buddhist Scripture. Popular Buddhist bear the main body of the social development ofBuddhist in Tang Dynasty, it not only potently promoted the amalgamation of Buddhist and traditional culture in China, but also was the main approach for Buddhist transmission, which was follow on the heels of classical reading. Popular Buddhist drove swingeing the transmission of Buddhist through the popularization form of transmission such as singing of Bianwen(Transformation Texts) and mural in the Buddha temples, and the ceremony action such as religious festivals and meetings. The Buddhist stories propagated in the folk, they were the objectives of novel writers for seeking. Secondly, mundane entertainment in the temple of Tang Dynasty was unparalleled developed, literates visited the temple and the monks, was prevalenced, thus the temples provided the lieus for novel inditement. Lastly, Buddhist literature in China was also contributed to the transmission of Buddhist literature.The influence of Buddhist Scripture on Chinese classical narrative literatures mainly included two aspects: contents and forms. The influence of contents included two lays: ideas and themes. With an eye to the influence of Buddhist idea on the novels of Tang Dynasty was obvious, and the recent studies were in-depth. Chapter 3 revealed the influence of Buddhist scripture on the novels in Tang Dynasty, focused on the themes influence.However, the achievements of novels of Tang Dynasty in the transplant and simulation to Buddhist stories should not be over-estimated due to the progress of inditement conception and the development of narrative skills. Moreover, in the accepting forms, the achievements of rewrite of Buddhist stories by novels of Tang Dynasty were less outstanding in performance than those of creation that used the themes and ideas of Buddhist stories combined with the local customs and environment. Even so, as one of the most persuasive study mode, the studies for themes influence need to be further strengthened.Chapter 4 is the study for the narrative forms. The special styles of graceful and vulgar Chinese Buddhist Scripture and the style of combination of hyma and prose had an obvious corresponding relationship with the narrative texts of novels in Tang Dynasty, it had been already described by the previous scholars. Since the classical novels associated closely with traditional history biography works, the styles of Tang-Legends was not completely due to the influence of Buddhist Scripture.
