He was a man of many talents including calligraphy and painting. (Although he held high government official it's not completely accurate to call him a political theorist). During his youth he overcome economic and health related difficulties; in particular, being an eleventh generation descendant of the first Sung emperor caused him many personal and social problems. But he not only overcame these difficulties, but he made his personal emotions the subject of his art and philosophy.Zhao Mengfu was involved in a variety of artistic movement during his life. He attained a high level of art in calligraphy, painting, and poetry as well as other artistic endeavors.Zhao Mengfu's artistic achievements influenced art during the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, and even influenced ancient Korea and other Asian nations.The discussion in this work is organized into six chapters.Chapter 1: Describes the author's research methods, research goals and how the research for this work proceeded.Chapter 2: Lays out background information on Zhao Mengfu's life.Chapter 3:Based on an understanding of Zhao Mengfu's life and times, this section looks atcontemporary art movements.Chapter 4: Zhao Mengfu's achievements were not only in the field of calligraphy,but also of painting. His painting style is very broad, drawing on a breadth ofworks by various masters. Because of this, in order to understand the milieu inwhich he painted, it is first necessary briefly sketch the situation of Tang and Sungdynasty painting.Chapter 5: This chapter primarily deals with the late Gaoli period of ancient Korean history. In this period King Gaoli built the Wanjuan Hall in the Mongol capital Datu in order to facilitate trade. Because of this, in this chapter, the author mainly focuses on Gaoli's social background, important personalities in his kingdom, as well as local lifestyles, philosophy and art to better understand the relationship between these two countries.Chapter 6: The historical background for this chapter covers the period from ancient to modern Korea. Songxue style calligraphy entered Korea in the Gaoli period but only flourished in modern Korea.
