This paper tries to study and criticize the dimension of philosophy of art of Western modern hermeneutics. The truth of art is a key problem that we need to face up to.The whole thesis is composed of introduction, conclusion and five chapters.The main content in the first to the fourth chapter is focused on the critical study on the dimension of philosophy of art of Western modern hermeneutics. The first chapter makes a simple review of the relationship between art and traditional hermeneutics which was regarded as the previous history of modern hermeneutics. The second chapter probes into the turn of ontology of hermeneutics as the starting point of modern hermeneutics, the fundamental contents and its dimension of philosophy of art of Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics as well as the relationship between understanding and truth of art. In the theory of Gadamer, experience of art just was an experience of understanding in an ontology sense, namely a true event of meaning comprehension. Therefore, the truth of art is the truth of understanding. The third chapter discusses the hermeneutical debate centering on Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics and its implication of philosophy of art. This part consists of the debate of significance and meaning between Gadamer and Hirsch, of theory of experience and transcendentalism between Gadamer and Apel, of understanding and critique between Gadamer and Habermas, and of dialogue and deconstruction between Gadamer and Derrida. The fourth chapter is concentrated on the dimension of philosophy of art of Ricoeur's hermeneutical theory. Ricoeur, who was another representative figure of modern hermeneutics, joined up the hermeneutical methodology, epistemology and ontology by hermeneutical "long route" and "hermeneutical arc" of text explanation, and accordingly brought to light the multiple levels of the truth of art. From the theory of metaphor, we can find that the truth of art is not only the truth of understanding, but also the truth of metaphor.The fifth chapter aims at clarifying the limitation of the dimension of philosophy of art of western modern hermeneutics and its theory of the truth of art, and furthermore, depicts the new individual theoretical construction on the basis of critical reflection.
