Intellectuals is one of important force in the human society'development all along. Sino-Japanese intellectuals in 19th century went through unprecedented historical radical changes and brought into play non-fungible important effects during the period of respective social change. The Western custom and knowledge drifting into East after the so called Great Geographical Discovery, under the same international conditions, China and Japan faced to the aggression of Western colonial powers and the challenge of Western civilization, intellectuals of two countries would react inevitably. In the sealing conditions, Chinese intellectuals with the psychology of China Power looking down at"Foreign Yi"when they began to get in touch with the West. Although Japanese intellectuals got in touch with the West for the first time also, they had strong curiosity because they had been had the tradition of learning from the outside since the ancient times. Therefore, faced to the Western knowledge, Chinese intellectuals attached importance to astronomy and mathematics, while Japanese intellectuals was interested in Western knowledge wholly. Chinese intellectuals did not absorb Western knowledge continually, while Japanese intellectuals kept on absorbing Western knowledge nearly. These differences took great influences on the understanding about West and external critical consciousness of Sino-Japanese intellectuals in 19th century.Sino-Japanese intellectuals met the completely new challenges which came from the world in 19th centuty.
